Commonwealth trumps Queanbean City Council

Finally sanity prevails as reported in today’s Crimes on the notion of building anew beneath flight paths. I find it amusing that a federal government independent review is deemed an ‘air swing’ by the Tralee developers. Give it up already!

Mr Albanese also attacked the notion that because planes flew over homes in Sydney and Melbourne they should be allowed to fly over homes in other areas.

”I have a view that’s been expressed before and is in the white paper, where we have greenfield sites under flight paths, then let’s not repeat the mistakes of the past.

”And frankly I’m flabbergasted at the argument that is put up that says planes fly over houses in Sydney or Melbourne, therefore they should be able to fly over residents in other areas.”

Amen to that.

“planes fly over houses in Sydney or Melbourne, therefore they should be able to fly over residents in other areas”

Actually I don’t see the problem with this logic. Fact is there will be a lot less flights overhead this region that if you did live in Synder or Melbourne, Canberra has benefited from having an international airport which has cut down a lot domestic freight flights between melbourne/sydney/brisbane to canberra as most international freight now comes in direct (also why its hard to overnight stuff from sydney anymore by normal courier) so in some ways the airport traffic is less because we have an international airport (im sure someone will argue with this logic though).

In the end you have to put the planes somewhere, and someone will always complain, so meh, its a part of life imho, go live somewhere without a major airport within a 30 minute drive of you and you probably won’t ever have much air traffic. Live in a city though and you will have noise, live near a city annd you will have noise, just not quite as much. Storm in a teacup if you ask me.

Close to what city???

Affordable housing? Are you kidding yourself? Take a look on the map and have a look at the numerous other vacant pieces of land where they could build houses numb nuts.

And where in the Queanbeyan surrounds (in NSW) might that be H1NG0?

How is the fastest growing city in southern NSW going to expand if not expanding south? That same map you talk about will show Molonglo Gorge, the ACT border, and Cuuembeun Nature Reserve all blocking development to Queanbeyan in any direction other than south. Your map may show lots of vacant land but think you will find you are looking at the ACT. Anyway, as I have said before in other posts on this topic, most of the development is not at Tralee but further south-east at Googong which is signficantly far enough away from the flight path to cause no concern at all.

P.S. I live in ACT so I am indifferent to Queanbeyan development, just wanted to air my rant.

The Village Building Co. which is the developer of Tralee is just like every other developer, it’s about making money. Beh1972 is right, the first purchasers of the land will acknowledge what they are buying into, but when the sell up it’ll be the next generation of home owners in the area who will be up in arms.

The point is the developer keeps arguing about facts that are not the real issue. The real issue is its under a flight path. Whether there is noise now, or whether there is suburbs with more noise in other cities are moot points. Since when has the argument “They do it, so why can’t we” been a valid excuse.

I have no issues and agree with the developer, that right now airport noise is not an issue. The fact is that airport noise will naturally grow, whether a freight hub is implemented or not. At some point in the future people will complain, because after all they want a cheap house with everything else and be close to the city etc etc and no aircraft noise.

At that point in time, the government will move flight paths or put a curfew on the airport.
Its happened everywhere else in Australia, so why would residents who buy under a flight path at Tralee be any different, even if they know about potential future noise in advance.

Each of them bring a little extra.
Freight hub will bring some jobs and cash, maybe a quick train, but heaps of trucks on the road and some flattened MTB trails at Majura.
Tralee will finally bring some close to City development, maybe more sustainable, with a bit of noise.
Current flight levels are fine at Tralee. Normal passenger expansion is fine. 24 hout freight hub, maybe not.
Pick your developer people…..Never forget that the airport is private!

The difference is we only have one airport, houses can be built anywhere. I would much rather prefer the airport be able to expand if needed than a few extra homes which will cause more problems than they solve.

There is enough land to build 100,000 of the 400m blocks they are selling in the “G” Ghetto and people camp in tents to live there. Keep up the good work Gungahlin.

Have a read of the actual federal govt review – I think you’ll find most of the commentators in todays Canberra Times have taken quite an “extrapolative” view of what’s in there (which when you read isn’t a hell of a lot):

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/aviation/nap/index.aspx

Good luck finding substantial policy statements in relating to Canberra (in fact most of it is about price monitoring and a single statement about another review looking at night time aircraft noise coming from Canberra Airport).

Yeah I don’t get it either, you would have be completely insane if you bought there without thinking it might get a little noisy. (Whether if you’re building or just moving in.)

Let them go for it if it will help drag down house prices a little.

Ok, so here is my question for the morons in Federal government.

Where are we going to build affordable housing?? i am not paying $730,000 to buld at Crace, nor over $650,000 to build on a tiny block in that shithouse future ghetto called Gungahlin.

The problem is – the same thing was said in Sydney 30 years ago.

In 10 years time the second owners of these homes will be complaining to their MP in this marginal electorate to limit the noise.

“we know we are buying under a flight path, but we are fine with that” tune will die off soon after the last house is sold.

Everyone can see it coming

…Frankly I don’t see what the problem is. If people are made fully aware of what they’re buying under a flight path, surely they don’t have any recourse if they get sick of the noise. It is a personal trade off, you get cheaper land but you have to have double glazed windows and sleep with ear plugs. Big deal
