An incident has recently occurred at the National Library.

Large numbers of police are in attendance and the library has been closed to the public.

More details as they come to hand.

ED – Em writes:

There’s been an “incident” and the National Library is currently blocked off by police.

Was going to the Baby Mozart concert at 11am but police had cordoned off the National Library entry. According to 666 ABC, there was a “suspicious parcel” found in the building – all clear now, but the building is still blocked off. Was told at the time that the concert would be on at 12:30pm instead, but I just phoned the Library and they said it’s now planned for 2:30pm but call to make sure the Library is open by then!

ED – Absent Diane writes:

Hi All,

DIMIA is currently locked down with a substance scare – I have heard rumours that National Library is as well.

Can anyone confirm.

Wax Off

ED – ABC Online reports:

An invitation to a charity ball has sparked a security scare at two of Canberra’s national institutions.

The substance turned out to be sand that had leaked out of an invitation to attend the South Pacific Ball, an event organised by the Southcare Rescue Helicopter Trust.

The same invitation also disrupted activities at Questacon and the Department of Immigration offices in Belconnen.

Only in Canberra.

Final Update:

The Canberra Times has comprehensive reportage here.

Damn you stencillers – Damn YOU!!!!!!!!

Maybe it is looking out for stencillers.

Surely that helicopter wouldn’t have anything to do with a substance scare?

There has also been an Army chopper buzzing around central Canberra all day as well.

I was kind of hoping that we would get to utilise our practice in evacuating. Apparently radio has reported that the offending letter was an invitation to a Pacific Themed charity fund raiser.. with sand in it!! I don’t know how true that is

There is no nice part of DIMIA. It’s like saying “I just did repairs on the cattle trucks”

a recumbent bike was spotted out the front of dimia. i was tempted to call the police.

Someone get me the bucket.

There is a nice part of DIMIA??? I haven’t discovered it yet LOL. According to my sources the powder was finely ground mixture of baking soda and sugar. I have heard that the other places are gonna locked in till about 4:30. Apparently tax got attacked but it must have been civic office.

“within an inch of our lives”? An inch which side?

Called Ticketek – they haven’t yet had confirmation of what’s going to happen from the Baby Mozart promoters, so anyone still with tickets should call Ticketek tomorrow to find out if there’s going to be another concert or a refund.

You do that! And I am always very quick to point out that I work in the nice part of the Dept, nothing to do with immigration or locking people up or deportation. We are lovely fluffy bunnies where I am. We don’t deserve to be anthraxed to within an inch of our lives!

Ah, transparency in DIMIA. Oxymoron?

Yes, it would indeed be a secret….. If everyone didn’t already know where I worked because I had TOLD THEM.

NLA is back in operation

Aha! LG’s hideous secret revealed!

Can confirm DIMIA was in lockdown from about 10am til 2pm. Suspicious substance found to be harmless. After 4 hours without air, staff not quite so harmless…

LG

Just called NLA again as I’d been told they were hoping to hold Baby Mozart at 2:30pm for those who couldn’t get into the 11am performance. NLA says they’re still locked down, and it’s not looking good for those hoping to go to Baby Mozart today. Will be calling Ticketek to see if I can get a refund…..

Can also confirm that they are not letting anyone in or out of the NLA.

Yep sources inside the building tell us that the NLA has been locked down – for bomb threat – as is questicon, and dimia

Fire truck turned up at the NLA about half an hour ago.

Perhaps the Yartzmafia discovered Paul Hetherington was named head honcho of the ACT Arts body and they all want grants…..
