Chief Minister Gallagher has the happy news that the Civic Merry-Go-Round is being given to “Canberra community group LEAD (Live, Experience, Access, Develop), a specialist not-for-profit organisation supporting people with disabilities”

“It is a fantastic outcome that LEAD has been awarded the trial contract to run the Civic Merry-Go-Round. LEAD, who has been working in Canberra for over 21 years,” the Chief Minister said.

“LEAD gives opportunities to Canberrans with a disability to work in a commercial venture, learning new skills and contributing to the community.

“The Civic Merry-Go-Round will provide 10 full-time, part-time and casual positions with additional seasonal work available.

“This venture will give people with a disability the opportunity to be part of the community and contribute to the legacy of the Merry-Go-Round, the iconic heart of our city centre,” the Chief Minister said.

The entire thing is enclosed in shutters.

John Hanna suggested that it should be moved to Glebe Park once – good idea.

Only if you enjoy finding syringes on the rides…

While I think this is a great idea (given that the group is properly resourced to deal with conserving the roundabout) and that working helping children there would be fun, I had to laugh.

I think the origin of the word circus is the round space for horses galloping/pulling chariots in Rome. And we’ve just had Katy Gallagher going on about healthy eating.

So it really is bread and circuses!

Plus – who is going to conserve the 100-year-old paintings that are all over it? Doc Dogg – I smell the same rat!

LOL I don’t mean to be cynical, but it seems the ACT Gov is doing the same thing I do when I have some old, degraded item that is too expensive to fix but too good to throw away…give it to charity 🙂

I hope they’ve done a thorough risk assessment – that merry-go-round is a very dangerous instrument for all it’s a “kids’ thing” (hoofs would crush a bike helmet in their way on their downward “stride”) . There needs to be at least one (you’d think two) able-bodied and mentally proficient person supervising the deck at all times … and I wonder what the insurance premiums will be (given the above) once it’s out of government hands. Hope the non-profit has done all its sums.

Sounds like a great idea. The merry-go-round is pretty neglected though. It’d be great to see it supported during the warmer months with some mini carnival-type events for the kids – a petting zoo, face painting, sideshow games, all that kind of stuff.

The city needs more activities to pull people out of the Canberra Centre vacuum and create some atmosphere around City Walk.

Can we get a roller coaster too?

Will a monorail do? I understand there’s one going cheap …

Only if you eat your vegetables.

😀

Post of the week!

sounds great, might need a bit of TLC though

I recently used the one at Broadbeach. Run by the Rotary club and in great nick. Hopefully a similarly avuncular person will be running it here.

great stuff

It sounds like a great place to allow people with disabilities to get work experience. Can’t get more central than that and there’s always a friendly atmosphere because how can you not smile when you’re watching a merry go round?

Unfortunately my child is now too old for me to be allowed to get a free ride…

Maybe they can return the drinks and ice creams.

And perhaps staff with people who dont scare the children.

Sounds like a great idea, as long as the owners of Landmark Cafe don’t get all punchy…
