Compulsory pet chipping comes into effect 1 May

By johnboy - 23 March 2011 20

george the kfa

Territory And Municipal Services are alerting pet owners that from 1 May all dogs and cats aged over 12 weeks must be microchipped on pain of a $75 infringement notice.

Chipping costs $40.

Considering anyone who actually cares for their cat or dog will already have done this, and the low probability of getting caught, the only people this will effect are complete morons with animals that get out all the time.

Perhaps they shouldn’t have pets at all?

The other question is when can we start chipping people? It would save a lot of trouble.

Maybe on the hand or the forehead?

What’s Your opinion?

johnboy, to say “Considering anyone who actually cares for their cat or dog will already have done this” is quite offensive…or at least appears holier-than-thou. Yes I would chip a young dog, by my 15 year old is not going to be done at this stage in her life….and I actually do care for her or she would not have gotten this far. You know it’s also illegal to use a mobile phone when driving, but I see more people doing this every day than I see unaccompanied dogs and cats roaming the streets.

Yet another example of the over-governance we suffer from here in the ACT..

you know, if owners looked after their animals, they never escaped or harmed anyone/anything it wouldn’t be the case. Unfortunately a lot of ‘laws’ created these days are for the lowest common denominator.

Might be a good idea to mention to curious owners where they can get them chipped in the ACT (if I recall correctly any vet can do it???)

Correct. It’s all in the TAMS media release (link provided in OP).

A few years ago there was no such thing as “chipping”, now it is compulsory. Ridiculous.

Making it compulsory for people to identify (or desex for that matter) the living creatures in their care hardly seems like over-governance, more like common sense and responsible pet ownership.

Microchipping itself has been around for a very long time, and has in fact been a legal requirement in the ACT for years – 1 May is the end of the ‘phase-in’ period for compulsory microchipping.

If you or your child were attacked or mauled by an unidentifiable dog, I’m sure you would kick up a stink about the government not enforcing compulsory microchipping.

You are a nasty piece of work, Capt. RAAF….

Captain RAAF 12:49 pm 23 Mar 11

Excellent!

Finally these people that own the cats I drop off at the Weston Creek animal shelter will be made to pay!!!!!!!

This is all the incentive to not gas them, they clog up my bin and make a hell of a noise and they….sob*…gently slip away…sob*

MUWAAAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA

The thing is – responsible pet owners probably do chip their pets already. Maybe it might stop the “free kittens available” on all classifieds and the like. If you don’t want your cat to have kittens please desex it. Its not that hard.

He’s a big sook on most things but he absolutely loves running on frost for some reason.

EvanJames 12:29 pm 23 Mar 11

I think he’s standing on the little path because he doesn’t want to freeze his paws on the frost. In north america you can get little boots for dogs for this reason but I have not seen them here.

Pooches at KFA level cute and naughty should also need to carry some kind of alert. “You may be smooched and pawed. He will get away with it because it’s adorable, even hilarious.”

Aww look how sweet he is!

Some irresponsible owners should be chipped (#1), but then again maybe they already have akle bracelet locators.

I wish someone would put my neighbours dogs through the chipper
