ACT Policing responded to a suspicious package on Tharwa Drive in Conder early today (Friday, December 2).

About 3.45am police discovered a suspicious package on Tharwa Drive in Conder.

ACT Policing General Duties members cordoned the area and requested the Specialist Response and Security (SRS) Bomb Response Team to attend.

The SRS Bomb Response Team is currently examining the package. Tharwa Drive, between Mentone View and Box Hill Avenue in Conder, has been closed in both directions.

Bloody Australia Post parcel contractors… Their parcel handling skillz are well mad…

What does a suspicuous package look like?

Probably wearing sunglasses and a trench coat and hanging out in a darkened alley.

Inside was a box of lights marked north side only.

I’ve had a couple of women told me that my package looked suspicious, or words to that effect. I really don’t want to elaborate…

You’re a walking time bomb I’ve heard…

With a propensity to go off early.

I’d send in the bomb squad

What does a suspicuous package look like? Members of the public need to know so that we can be sure to report all the ones we see.
Hope it wasn’t just a tradies esky lid with anti/pro muslim graffiti all over it or a gum boot with a week old sock in it…
I’d hate to see a truck carrying clocks spill it’s load, we’d be in lock down for weeks.
This is Australia, not N Ireland of old FFS.

Yes it’s best to throw caution to the wind when dealing with a possible explosive, because it’s absolutely impossible for someone to make a bomb and leave it on the side of a major road.

1 love the sarcasm,

There has been bombs here before. Take the Sydney Hilton building,

@bd84 perhaps you can offer your services to open the bag first and tell them if it is a bomb or not? Your career wouldn’t last that long I’m afraid when you happen to actually open a bag that triggers a real bomb and blows your head clean off your now non existent torso. But it was the thought that counted.

I suspect another typical overreaction. I don’t see why they just don’t open the package when they first find it to see what’s in it rather than calling in anyone and everyone to stand around scratching their chin and inconveniencing everyone else.

I mean, who would really leave a bomb or other harmful package in conder in the middle of nowhere in particular? I don’t think it would rate highly on the list of terrorist targets.. Perhaps they could introduce a common sense rule….

Yes, because a roadside IED would cause no real damage to passing motorists, cyclists, ACTION clientele… oh, hang on…

That said, it’s Tharwa Drive, not the Tarin Kowt road.

bd84, perhaps you can volunteer to to be the suspicious package opener then for the AFP?! Save a lot of money, no more bomb squad required.

I felt smug riding past all those cars on my pushbike this morning 🙂

The biggest problems is, people were trying to rat run through the northern part of Gordon causing a hold up at the other end. If everybody just stayed on the main drag things would have been better.

I was going to take some photos Johnboy but there really was not much to see I’m afraid.

The thought is appreciated!

Woodcock Drive in Gordon is the only way out for all residents of Conder, Banks and Gordon. Apparently it’s been a parking lot since about 7:15 and is still moving at a snails pace 2 hours later.

Ahhh, again in the headlines- one of the most mentioned suburbs. That whole area, for some reason, always brings “Escape from New York” with Kurt Russell to my mind.Pretty much the same these days, isn’t it? 🙂
