ACT Policing is responding to a report that a suspected pipe bomb discharged on a nature-strip between Lanyon High School and St Clare of Assisi Primary School on Heidelberg Street, Condor, around 2pm today (August, 30).

The incident is currently being investigated by ACT Policing Tuggeranong Patrol officers and the AFP Bomb Response team.

AFP Forensics members are en-route.

Superintendent Paul Shakeshaft said, “fortunately no one was hurt during the incident, which occurred while both schools were still in session.”

Investigations are ongoing.

So detonation is supersonic while deflagration is subsonic and using the term discharged in relation to a pipe bomb is just a general term indicating that something has ‘gone off ‘or ‘relieved of its contents’.

Not quite – “using the term discharged” is just the AFP keeping to its usual low standards of literacy.

The cretins who do this sort of thing put the lives of others at risk for their entertainment, and I wish them all a premature discharge, with attendant consequences.

It’s a crying shame that the fathers of these cretins didn’t experience that very same problem.

It would have done the human race a bit of a favour.

Or maybe if their mothers had closed their legs?

Very good. You may go to the top of the class.

I’ve lost count of the number of really substantial explosions I’ve heard in Canberra over the years, and my calls to the cops has never resulted in any action that I’ve heard of.

A pipe bomb *detonates*. A firearm discharges.

English. Not rocket science.

Well look, explosions are my forte, so if we’re gonna be pedants here

A “detonation” typically refers to a high supersonic exothermic reaction that ultimately drives a supersonic shock wave in front of it. This is the effect you see from high explosive or nuclear devices for example.

Pipe bombs containing home brew low explosives typically burn very fast, make a flash, go bang and produce some smoke in a process known as deflagration, but I’d be astounded if one of them actually detonated in the technically correct sense of the term.

Having said all that, it would be hard to tell the difference between an HE device detonating and an IED deflagrating if either one went off in your vicinity.

Having had one of these things disintegrate my brick letterbox, I can confirm that the pipe bombs of Tuggeranong do indeed detonate.

According to Roget’s Thesaurus, ‘discharge’ is a synonym for ‘detonate’.

So, on that basis, one could have an unpleasant detonation in one’s underwear … Yes, I can see that I suppose.

I am now convinced that people commit crimes in Conder just to make the ACTP Media Unit look bad.

Not to mention trying to out run cop cars in a Ford Festiva to make cops look bad… and then blow .189… Hilarious.
