It’s that time of the year again… Having just spoken at 3 graduations in the last 48 hours, we thought this would be an appropriate time to share a tidbit of the Keynote Speech our CEO has been giving to graduating year 10’s across the Territory:

You walk like adults, you talk like adults, you act like adults. Time to take ownership of your own responsibilities.

Not a single person on this planet has more of a responsibility for your success than you. For your greatness than you.

You have an undisputed duty to yourself, to be who you want to be, to go after your dreams and goals and conquer all obstacles in your way.

Your responsibility is not just to dream, but to chase your dreams, no matter how small, no matter how big, no matter how far or close to home.

You have the responsibility, the unequivocal purpose to be great.

Congratulations to all graduating year 10’s and their parents, we wish you all the very best!

Full speech available here.

I heard Dreams was the girl in the red dress.

Nice to see a speech which emphasizes personal responsibility rather than the “rights” mantra that seems to be foremost in the minds of most young people.

Migosh- I could hear John Laws speaking…

I think it’s a message they need to hear.

It could be a little less nuanced, however.

Something like this:

Get off your lazy butt. Don’t expect everyone to do everything for you forever. Stop complaining how hard everything is. You are 16. This is the easiest time of your life. Get over yourself.

How profound.

Is there anything you can say that WON’T a graduation speech horribly cliche? It’s been 3 years since I graduated and I’m still lost! Doh!

Clearly English wasn’t your strong point. This could be one reason why you’re lost.

“WON’T” (sic) what?

Cliché (note the accent) is a noun. The word you’re looking for is “clichéd”, which is an adjective.

…and you wasted your time typing that, why? (note the sentence fragment.) Hooray for ALT codes. ééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééééé

It’s been 20 years since I graduated and I’m still lost…

…and I agree with you Jivrashia…not a speech that is going to penetrate the mind of a year 10-er. Telling someone they have the responsibility to be great…but not how to go about it is not very helpful.

My experience of leaving school and going out into the big, wide world is kind of like being shoved into a container, given a good shake, tipped out onto the ground all disoriented, and told ‘now just run and be great’…no wonder I head-butted so many walls before I finally worked things out.

If I was in year 10 I would not have been able to digest any of those words…
Actually even as an old bastard I’m not sure if any of those give me direction.
It should be remembered that this speech is for the benefit of year 10 students and not for the parents in attendance.

How about:
“Congratulations. Well done for hanging in there when study must have been your pet hate. We hope you take away with you something from here that will be useful in your future. Good luck, and take care.

Simple and candid.

Is there anything you can say that WON’T a graduation speech horribly cliche? It’s been 3 years since I graduated and I’m still lost! Doh!

Good words. Well done.
