The ACT Department of Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) will conduct two controlled burns today 18 January 2011, in Cook and adjacent to the National Arboretum weather permitting.

The Cook burn is located at Mt Painter near Coulter and William Hovell Drives.

The other burn is adjacent to the National Arboretum near the Tuggeranong Parkway

I can’t believe that it is the middle of January, and that the weather over summer has been so cool and wet that we could even consider doing a HR burn right now. This must have been one of the quietest seasons on record (I have no idea about actual stats – last year was pretty quiet too) and people are worried about the physiological affect of a little smoke? Image it there is actually a real bushfire again some day?

All the growth will make it interesting in the next year or so.

I cannot believe that TAMS scheduled controlled burns on the anniversary of the 2003 bushfires! Did they consult their sister department responsible for mental health regarding the effect the timing of this burn might have on the Canberra community, particularly those directly affected by the 2003 fires? Incredible insensitivity!

Those pricks! I can’t believe they would be so insensitive as to prevent another bushfire disaster!

It was 8 years ago, I don’t think a little controlled burn is going to affect anyone that badly. Heck, if you hadn’t have said it I wouldn’t even have remembered it was the anniversary, and I was in Duffy on that day.

Ah jeez. I thought afterwards that I might have been a little too subtle there. I realise irony doesn’t travel well over the net, so I guess I should’ve stuck in a smiley.

Anyway, I’ll try again in order to clarify things…

And one of the controlled burns was in Cook! How ironic is that? Burning!! Cook!! Strikes me as a bit funny that, in an a very, very dark sort of way…

Shit, it’s been a long day. I think I’ll just go to bed.

Get a life you two. Burns are scheduled for the most appropriate conditions. There used to be a good old Aussie tradition of ‘Get Over It’. That’s exactly what the community has to do. Crying and carrying on like a bunch of sooks isn’t going to change history, bring back the dead, or more importantly it seems to Canberrans, their possessions. This business of constantly being upset by the memories of things that didn’t go the right way is the quickest way to suffer a life of introspection and depression.

Look around… the Brindabellas are once again coming to life, there’s a green tinge and new growth in even the hardest hit places. Celebrate the return of what there once was, don’t dwell pointlessly on the past that you cannot change.
