Sydney and Melbourne no doubt have gangs of thieves nicking gold bullion, silver, diamonds etc. But canberra has it’s gang of master copper thieves.

A tin heist would be more lucrative per tonne! Sadly there’s not often 2 tonnes of gold sitting outside on a pallet in a yard in a quiet industrial area…

LSWCHP, Copper is going for for a bit under $10k a ton at the moment, so copper blagging is a lucrative business. So while it’s not up there with the great London train robbery, it’s still a nice little earner and more attractive than holding up a servo for $200 and a pack of pringles.

Either people don’t learn or else its an inside job.

And thinking about it, I thought they’d busted the copper robber? Could we possibly have 2 gangs of copper thieves in Canberra?[/quote>

Considering the guy who got nabbed only had $5k worth of copper, he was probably just a copy cat.

For some reason, the very existence of a bunch of badass specialist copper blaggers seems…I dunno…surreal, strangely downmarket and yet quaintly Canberran.

What next? Lead? Or perhaps the great tin heist of 2011?

Man these copper thieves are pros, you’d think folks with large amounts of copper might start doing a bit more to protect it considering it’s been happening for months.
