Cops to pay $100,000 rent per week for empty building

In this article it is reported that the Australian Federal Police will have to pay $5 million a year of taxpayer’s money for the Anzac Park West Building in Parkes. This building has just had $50 million spent on renovations but the AFP have now decided it is not suitable for them. They want to build a new bigger and better 85,000sqm “super-complex” at Majura. How much will that cost?

AFP are still paying $2 million a year for their headquarters on Northbourne Avenue, as well as almost $1.5million a year for two blocks of units in Port Moresby that have not been used since 2005 because of some legal problems.

Finance might take the opportunity to turf Environment out of the JG Gorton Building (was DEH, now DEW) into one of these vacent places, so they can move all of Finance under one roof. They’re scattered around 4 different locations in Canberra right now.

Mess – the tiny ol’ police station now houses DIRECTIONS ACT -A drug counselling/education centre etc.

Wahts become of the old Police station in Woden? Is that still empty?

Including the gaol…

This has happened to ever govt dept that has built a new building. Why don’t they learn to allow a bit of extra space?

There’s no way in the current rental market in Canberra that the building will remain vacant. I imagine there are already quite a few guvvie depts with accom issues lining up to take it over…

A point not made clear in the CT article was that the payment goes to DoFA. So while this stupid expense will hurt AFP’s budget, it will not cost taxpayers, as the money is just going from one budget to another.

On the wider issue of departments like AFP outgrowing their buildings before they even move in, see “Office Accommodation Woes” here: http://www.gcc.asn.au

It could be worse, we could be paying them $100k a week for them NOT to do their job…

Hmmm. Not Happy Jon.
An remember the local ALP/ fed ALP rort from the 1990’s?
