Corbell's poor little 'Victims'

Most people that have lived in this town for a few years realise that the ACT justice system is s***. If it was a car you’d be ringing scrap metal yards hoping one of them will agree to come and take it off your hands.

So today I noticed that our new Chief Justice (Murrell) has been sworn in. I’ve sat in her court many times and she’s a good operator. (A bit soft for my liking, but you cant please everybody). But the article went on to quote our Attorney General.

ACT Attorney-General Simon Corbell is quoted as saying “So many people who come before the court are the victims of injustice…” We have an A.G. who believes that the perpetrators, are the victims.

Friends and neighbors, I think we just may have found the source of the cancer.

Also I am no fan of Terence Higgins. For those of you wishing him ill in his retirement, bear in mind that he now has to spend more time with his family. That may well be punishment enough for his reign of error. And perhaps the media will no longer shy away from naming his step-son when he is next in court.

Hmmm true… the Media in this town are often misinformed or simply dicks… so it is a mystery why afore-mentioned step son has so regularly been left anonymous when there is no legal compulsion for the media to do so.

I couldn’t find that quote from Corbell in the Canberra Times article nor in his media release http://www.cmd.act.gov.au/open_government/inform/act_government_media_releases/corbell/2013/new-act-chief-justice-welcomed-in-ceremonial-sitting.

I did find such a quote on the ABC news article, but it’s a little incoherent so I wonder if it is reported correctly.

So without knowing for sure the words that may have come before it or after it, I would say you may be over-interpreting.

He may have been referring to the civil jurisdictions. He may also have been referring to the victims, who “come before the court” as witnesses, and whose interests are not well-served by waiting years for the criminal court case to be finalise.

Some of the people taking cases to the civil court jurisdiction are perhaps challenging decisions made by the Planning Minister, one S. Corbell.

I am no fan of Corbell, and am happy to take any free kick, but this one may not be justified.

He’s right. Many perpetrators of crime have experienced injustice. But while that may go some way to *explaining* how they end up where they are and doing what they’re doing, and may well need to *inform* sentences in order to achieve the biggest benefit for the community at large (long term reduction in offending), it should not *excuse* behaviour.
