Before the internet existed lonely Canberra nerds had to go to CanCon to discover to our delight that there were human females who shared our interests.

It’s hard to explain today just how many suicides that would have prevented.

Having in the intervening years gone heavy on the male-centric table top war games we see they’re having a Cosplay competition which should bring some diversity to the crowds.

Are you Secretly ‘Victor Von Kraken’ Master of the Steam Walker Leviathan or Perhaps ‘Thordar the Red’ Scourge of the Kings and wizards, Do you have the ‘Fantastic Four’™ on Speed dial or do you just like to get your Kamehameha on.

Either way come to CANCON and let you imagination run free in the

CANCON 2014 Cosplay Competition

Enter into one of the six available categories

— Steampunk
— Sci Fi
— Fantasy
— Anime / Japanese Video Games
— Gaming / Western Video Games
— Comic Book / Western Animation

There will Trophies and awards available in both the skit completion and the ‘The Peoples Choice Award’ chosen by those attending CANCON

More power to them.

Don’t let on that a good many gamer/anime girls are hot, it will only encourage the bogans to attend.

Relax. I don’t think I would be able to dish out that many wedgies to the nerds within the allocated timeframe without collapsing from exhaustion. Although, I must admit that it seems like an ideal opportunity to set a new Guinness World Record for most nerds admitted to a hospital ED to have their undies surgically removed from their tonsils. Katy G would probably just fudge the numbers leaving me short of a new record anyway!

I’d think you’d run into a few issues – geeks and nerds are often put into martial arts as children and more then a few stay as adults.

I seriously can’t wait for CanCon. Our board game list that we want to buy is giant

“… more then a few stay as adults’.

A real geek or nerd would know the difference between ‘then’ and ‘than’. You are undeserving of the effort required to administer a good wedgie. Be gone, imposter!

Personally, am looking forward to heading along to Cancon and indulging in my chosen hobby – Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures.

If some of the other cool kids with skills in textiles, art and hair design want to play dress ups over in their corner, more power to them. I’d probably prefer to see them advertise the fact via a six foot tall Space Marine but that’s me. Highlighting one particular cosplayer who’s moderately famous in the circle? Fair enough, as you were.

I am at least happy that, in my experience of Cancon at least (we’ll see how we go with PAX later this year, having missed it last year) the tabletop/board/wargaming world has avoided the “booth babes” that infect other conventions – promo girls and eye candy hanging about booths designed to inspire guys dicks to lead them over to be marketed to. THAT I would find objectionable.

Now be prepared to be called gay by Ben Dover…

So nerds dicks can short circuit their brains too? Fascinating.

Bingo. Just have a quick look at how women like Anita Sarkeesian have been treated when discussing the sexism and rampant mysogeny in gaming for a quick example.

This would be true if we were talking about LAN parties or online computer or console gaming, but CANCON is not that (well, last time I looked it wasn’t.) CANCON is role play gaming (ie., Dungeons and Dragons), miniature wargaming, and board gaming, with chess thrown in. Miniature gamers tend to be older gentlemen, while role players have a more even mix of sexes. They’re still geeks, mind you, but not the kind that you are alluding to.

ScienceRules said :

This is just another example of women being reduced to slabs of electric meat for male titilation. Surely we can create a better environment for our daughters and female friends?

Difference is that here women and girls do so willingly and with consent- and in control. They’re the ones who are choosing the costumes to wear, and they do so because they want to, not for some male fantasy. Sure, many costumes are quite brief, but if a woman doesn’t want to wear it, she doesn’t. You just have to have a look at other conventions, such as Supanova, that the majority of cosplayers want to be there.

Sure there are issues such as harassment and sexism, but that’s the same everywhere. What we as educated members of geekdom have to do is educate and demonstrate more inclusive and less discrimatory behaviour to and with our fellow geeks.

Far too many idiots posting in this thread .

Yes, only a sexist gamer would mention her bazookas. As an ex-military man, I would just like to say that they are more like 84mm Carl Gustavs, than 66mm LAWs.

I hafta say though, that woman must be very, very small. The gun looks to me like a standard M-16 style receiver, which is a very small, light weapon, but it looks like she’s carrying a cannon.

I believe it is an M4 Assault carbine (same calibre 5.56mm) as used by 82nd Airborne, but you are right, the scale seems wrong.

The M4 *is* an M16.

The M4 is the carbine version of the M16. The barrel of the M4 is 5.5 inches shorter (plus flash suppressor), so obviously has a shorter range. The stocks are different (the M4 being collapsible) and the M4 has a detachable carry handle and different sight mount. The mounts for the M203 (optional 40mm grenade launcher are also different. I know the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment were using both the M4 and M16 side by side in Afghanistan, but they may have been using the M4A1 variant which has different fire settings so the shooter is not restricted to a three round burst.

And the scale is fine – she has her fingers around the grip and her index just reaches the front of the trigger guard.

AR-15 and the scale seems fine, ya dammned “know-it-alls”.

I’ve heard that one of the CanCon games has been banned for setting impossible tasks.

Task 5) Go out to a bar and talk to a real girl.

Task 14) Experience sunlight on your torso.

Task 27) Abstain from masturbation for two nights….

Two words: Jessica Nigiri.

Two more words: Yaya Han. *rolls eyes*

I remember back in the day (this would be the eighties) a short, rubensque girl, who would be fairly ordinary in civilian clothes, showed up at one Cancon at Bruce TAFE as a Red Sonya-esque warrior women. She was the only costumer there, and all of us geeks (and we were generally male) were pop-eyed and jaws agape.

Nowadays of course you aren’t a convention unless you have a few cosplayers hanging around, and it looks like Cancon has surrendered to the rising tide of eye candy (for both sexes). Because, you know, watching someone pushing miniatures across a table, moving cardboard units on a hex map, or a group of people huddled in front of a guy behind a cardboard shield (you can tell it’s been awhile since I went to Cancon) is truly *engrossing*.

Can I go dressed as naked man – hero and saviour of the emperor with no clothes! I shall proudly go where nudity has never gone before!!

There was a very disturbing episode of CSI http://www.tv.com/shows/csi-crime-scene-investigation/fur-and-loathing-273258/ in which they gradually learned more and more about a club where people dressed up as furry animals to get it on with each other. Only trouble was, one very feminine cat was actually a man inside the costume, unknown to all the folk around him. And that wasn’t even half of the disturbing nature of the plot.

But Canberra isn’t Las Veqas.

I agree….and a couple or herd is called Gothopotomi when there is more than one Gothapotomus.

How little you know Mr. Dover.

Good stuff, the Impact Comics gig was pretty popular, this event brings people from interstate, who are quite well behaved and responsible as well. Shame Shame the local council hasnt picked up on this (though Im sure its been brought to their attention) over the last 25+ years.

I want to go dressed as Gir from Invader Zim, failing that…..JTHM.
