Cost of Fuel in Canberra?

So I’ve heard all the excuses in the past about fuel costs but why on earth are we paying approximately 13 cents a litre more than Melbourne and Sydney right now???

Motormouth advises ULP in Melb is 135.7 and Sydney 136.9 and poor ol Canberra up at 147.9

There has to be someone challenging this? Isnt there??

Don’t forget Sydney do not sell unleaded petrol. Of course E10 prices would be cheaper… I’d rather pay for quality unadulterated unleaded petrol for much better value!

agree with Someonesmother
Canberra is a closed market not only for petrol, medical infranstructure but also property. Canberra is a good place to invest because of its tight vacancy rate and that is why many people working in Public Sector, earn decent salary and invest, made capital gain in last property booming and move to QLD for retire.

Sometimes feel Canberra is not part of Australia

Fuel in Albury was a good 15c cheaper than Canberra last weekend too. Given that we’re both inland cities with no oil refineries and both about 300km from the nearest major port where a oil tanker would dock, then it does seem like we’re getting the rough end of the stick.

Yep, we are being ripped off here.

The difference in fuel price between here and Sydney is bugger all, when considered in the context of costs to run a car.

Agreed. For me the difference is about $2/week.

Canberra is a closed market not only for fuel, but other services including medical specialists, etc, etc. The more you travel the more you realise that Canberrans are held for ransom in a nanny state (Territory).

This Krats chap is driving me up the bloody wall.

Learn some basic grammar mate.

Duh.

On a serious point, yes some hardcore price gouging going on here in Canberra. Not sure what’s to be done about it though…

Any practical ideas?

Now You Know Why Woolies/Coles Are Giving Away 8/10cpl On Fuel Vouchers,To Bring Us Into Line With Other Cities. They WIN We LOSE.If I Was To Tell You What Actually Happens Inside Service Station’s You Would Call Me A Liar.

Competition can’t be the reason either. My fiance filled up in Cowra on the weekend and paid about $1.40. There’s no way the competition would be greater in a small town in regional NSW than in Canberra!

If you’re worried about fuel prices, you could get a smaller car, ride a bike, catch a bus, or some combination of those three! Remember that we aren’t paying $20/day or $6/hr for parking in Canberra yet, so petrol prices are the least of your worries.

I was in Melbourne yesterday and noticed with outrage that ULP was about 137. And since they got rid of that nifty weekly cycle, you have no chance to scam cheaper petrol midweek.

The usual reason is there is less competition in Canberra relative to Sydney and Melbourne because it is about 11 times smaller.

I made a scatter-graph showing the relationship between population and petrol price of based on the prices on motormouth.

Seems that it is probably just the market at work.
