Cost of Fuel in Phillip

There seem to have been some pretty wild fluctuations in the cost of fuel in Phillip this week. For most of the week (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday), both the Shell and BP outlets on Melrose drive were selling fuel for about $1.22 per litre, there was a difference of about 2c PL between the two servos, but nothing significant.

Yesterday, the BP jumped to something like $1.40 (can’t recall the exact figure) while the Shell stayed about $1.22.

This morning, the BP is down to $1.19, with the shell at about $1.23. What’s going on? Could this be some actual competition between two Canberra service stations?

I was at the Shell in Phillip a couple of weeks ago filling with up pulp on a Wednesday arvo at the only pump available, all the others had the not in use sign up. A bloke pulls up, trys the out of order pump and lo and behold, it works! Questioned the bloke behind the counter he said “no, its out of order”. When I explained that the other bloke just used it he said “yeah sometimes they don’t work” Go figure…

Ha! The V8 can take regular 91 octane no problem, but doesn’t run as well or as economically (and doesn’t have quite the same kick at 6000rpm…).

Agreed VY – I got most excited yesterday when I only had to pay 134.9 for Vortex 98! Regardless of the fact it’s only a miniscule difference, it still felt better…

Oh, can your car run on the cheap stuff? :p

Petrol’s only a small component of the true cost of running a car. If the price changes a bit, I don’t really care.

Still, it makes it easier to stomach putting Premium 98 octane in the V8 rather than the cheap-arse 95 octane stuff I’ve occasionally had to use.

@ant, yesterday the “cheap” price was 115.9, I was quoting the normal ULP figure. Amazing that it was so cheap, comparatively.

You’ve got to watch the Shell in Manuka, the “cheap” price they have lit up is usually that poison petrol. That said, I’ve found them cheap enough with Coles dockets. Better than the Hungry Jacks Shell in Fyshwick whose price is usually exactly 4 cents more than other servos.

Clearly a directive from Shell management then.

Couldn’t believe it yesterday when the Shell in Manuka had ULP for 119.9 and the BP in Kingston was at 136.9 for same. Shell Manuka is usually pretty reliable in being the most expensive servo in town.

You sound surprised Johnny?!

Oh, and to the idiot who parked right between two pumps thereby blocking access to one pump: GROW A BRAIN!

I purchased at Shell yesterday for $1.18, and they were pretty busy.
