The Liberals’s Zed Seselja and Brendan Smyth are proudly announcing they’ve got the Assembly on board for their Financial Management (Cost of Living) Amendment Bill 2012:

ACT Deputy Opposition Leader Brendan Smyth, who introduced the Bill, said it is disappointing it took legislation for the government to take notice of the cost of living problems they’ve helped create.

“A cost of living analysis of Budget proposals is something the Canberra Liberals have been pushing for for the last two years,” Mr Smyth said.

“I’m very glad Canberrans will now receive information about the cost of living implications they’re entitled to, but I’m disappointed it took legislation for the government to agree to such a basic and logical request.

“Electricity prices up 75 per cent”

Zed was trying to get milage out of this on 666 this morning. Ludicrous. As Jo Laverty pointed out to him, power costs are decided by an independent authority and many of the charges are dependant on a national market. His only response was to deflect, saying “well they can’t take credit for it then.”

From an opposition that has been slamming the government for cost blow outs on single, large scale projects for months now, it’s a bit rich to try and push forward something that will try and predict the cost of living effects of legislation on over 360,000 people.

(P.S. Jo Laverty should stay on 666 mornings, genuinely impressed.)
