Territory And Municipal Services advise that the round-the-clock nature of the Cotter Dam expansion means they’ll be extending the closure of the Cotter Campground which was supposed to end next week.

Instead it will be closed until 22 December.

“In October 2010 the Cotter campground was temporarily closed due to increasing construction noise and activities associated with the enlargement of the Cotter Dam which had been extended to night works and occasional weekend works,” Brett McNamara, Rural District Manager, Parks and reserves, said today.

“To ensure the experience of visitors was not impacted by the increasing level of noise and construction traffic, we decided to temporarily close the campground. The initial closure period was until 31 May 2011.

“Dam construction officials have recently advised the department that storms and associated flooding events experienced earlier this year have delayed some of the construction activities, in particular the requirement to work at night and on the weekend.

TAMS do advise that you can still camp in many other places including Woods Reserve on Corin Road, Honeysuckle campground, Orroral campground, and Exhibition Park.

So the way to ensure visitors are not impacted by noise and traffic is to ensure that there aren’t any visitors? I was disappointed enough when the campground remained closed between Christmas Eve and the New Year last year, despite the promise that they would be temporarily reopened for that week.
