cotter dam construction

Henry82 was out at the Cotter Dam yesterday and took this picture of the construction work out there.

They’ve just commenced pouring of the cement, which will be a 24/7 operation for the next 8 months. Apologies for the glare as we went to the lookout at the worst time of the day.

If you look next to the left crane, there is a wire basket sitting on the hill, that’s the height of the new dam wall (80 meters high). The old wall is only 30 meters high and can be seen amongst the glare in the photo.

Are they really still working on this at 11pm, or did they just forget to turn the lights off?

Its called a continuous pour.as they dont want any seams in the dam wall. A lot of buildings are made this way these days, particularly constructions like smoke stacks

At the open day the guide said that they pour concrete almost 24hrs a day, with a brief window of downtime during the day for plant maintenance.

Are they really still working on this at 11pm, or did they just forget to turn the lights off?

It’s called *concrete*. Cement is the stuff they mix in with the other ingredients to make it set.

Thanks for the live camera feed!!!

Live camera feed from the dam site. (stills not video)

Updated once a minute.
I spent a good 20 minutes watching them rolling out concrete this morning. half a meter down 79.5 meters to go.

Do you have access to insider knowledge?

You’re right, the base of the dam wall is below what can be seen. This is a photo from their “Discovery Trail” which is open to the public 24/7 (now that they’ve stopped blasting). It’s no secret that they’ve started pouring concrete, its mentioned in yesterdays CT (shudder). We went for a tour there, organised by ANU. I’m not employed by ACTEW (or their contractors).

I’m impressed you could tell that they’ve started pouring the concrete, even though the view of the base of the new dam is obstructed by the temporary dam in the river. Do you have access to insider knowledge?
