ACTEW have announced the results of their “Grass Roots” project at Watson’s Rosary Primary School to find the best ways to grow grass here in Canberra.

“With the turf varieties, we found that Couch and Soft Leaf Buffalo performed exceptionally well, with these warm season varieties performing better the less water they received. The Fescue blends also performed well and the RTF variety showed a tremendous ability to regenerate and withstand foot traffic,” said Mr Goodfellow.

CEO Mark Sullivan also mentions you’ll soon be allowed to use sprinklers on your lawn.

Anyone notice they can’t spell ‘deficit’ in the Tables in the report? Anyone for defecit?

I’ve heard good things about Empire Zoysia (sp?) turf in Canberra, does anyone have any experience using that – good or bad?

Couch is good unless you cover it in vinyl or plastic. Then it makes fart noises when you sit on it.
It’s amazing what you can learn on this site.

couch is only good if surrounded by concrete. if you have garden beds it will get right into them, and you can’t get rid of it. yet grass seed blends always have it in there. if i wanted weeds i wouldn’t need to buy them by the packet.

Agreed Sepi,
Couch is an invasive weed.
I can’t believe they are actually promoting it.

Couch makes for great fairways at Federal GC, and great lawns if you take a little time and effort to fertalise, weed etc.

Who would have thought that grass suitable for high traffic areas on golf courses and playing fields would make for good playgrounds? Amazing…

From what I can gather they only trialled couch, buffalo, fescue and RTF. So, basically, they all worked.

Couch is a crappy creeping weed.

Can anyone tell me where to buy grass seed in Canberra that doesn’t contain couch?
