Could ACT Labor conference get any more pointless?

So the weekend just gone has had yet another ACT Labor Party conference come and go with hardly a ripple throughout the city’s media. How different self government has made the ACT Branch and its conferences. In years past where the conference ran for two days not the current one day limp-a-thon of extreme nothingness the party rank and file members continue along the path of irrelevance driven by the desire of the elected members to make the party work for them.

Lets look at what the major issue was for the party which has governed our city for nearly a decade, the first post Stanhope conference (unfortunately due to the granting of life membership the assembled masses were not saved from yet another of the dear leaders speeches hopefully he won’t be back next year to bore everyone some more, 10 years was more than enough) the first conference of the rule of the Gen Xers so what did we get?

A new focus of the challenges that face the city, education, health, planning, economic growth, expanding the private sector, electoral reform, the environment, new employment opportunities, transport options? No none of the above.

What drove the conference what issues burned through the conference what was the set piece for the media what issues consumed the new treasurer and the government; marriage equality or as most of the population knows it gay marriage.

Now don’t get me wrong here I genuinely don’t care about this issue if gays want the same rights to be as unhappy as the straight population and to complain about their partners I’m not going to stand in there way but really is this the hottest issue in the town and what does it say about the focus of the GenNext leadership of the ACT ALP?

The reason the conference was irrelevant and boring is that Labor knows they will always be in government in the ACT so they were simply going through the motions.

As for gay marriage, it is simply a dead issue now. The Greens ran hard with it last year and that put the kiss of death on it as mainstream Aussies turned against The Greens and their agenda. The ridiculous “boycott Israel” campaign championed by the party horrified Australians and most picked up the inconsistency of a party championing a fundamentalist Muslim cause (Palestine) and condemning the only middle eastern country where gays can live openly on one hand, and saying they believe in gay causes on the other hand.

Labor’s alliance of convenience with The Greens has severely damaged Labor’s credibility and support in the wider community. If you lay down with dogs you get up with fleas.

This conference might very well be the last hurrah for Labor. They will be out of office federally, and in every state and territory (except the ACT) within a year or so, and I confidently predict they will quickly disintegrate and their role will then be filled by a new Leftist party based on The Greens.

And I should have added that that’s what’s driven the Aussie Battlers to the Liberal Party.

Judging by the OP, the primary area of focus should have been education, with a particular emphasis on sentence structure.

Judging by the comments, they could also have discussed the introduction of a sarcasm recognition program.

Who are Labor? Are they the smelly ones that hug trees?

no.,, that’s the “Greens”.

Labour used at one time to be the party of the working class, the party for the man and woman who formed the bedrock of our society, and sought to get a better deal for them.

Nowadays, having been over run by the single issue brigade, labour are the party of the non working/minority group/cause ridden/environmentally concious/middle class guilt brigade.

Labour are so wrapped up in trying to keep all these minority interests happy, that they’ve totally and utterly abandoned the people who created them in the first place. If you are a white, straight, working, home buying, law abiding, tax paying, average working bloke, the labour party couldn’t give a sh!t about you. Apart that is from taking your money away from you to spend on the antithesis of you.

Sad but true. Taken over by the land rights for gay whales crowd.

The people’s flag is palest pink
It’s not as red as you might think.
White collar workers stand and cheer
Your Labour government is here.
We’ll change the country bit by bit
so no-one will notice it.
And just to show we’re still sincere
We’ll sing the Red Flag once a year.

Sadly, the ALP just isn’t what it used to be. When I was a child, Labor was the ONLY party that my parents, and their parents before them, voted. Labor was generationally for the people – no question.

Now, well, they are more for themselves and the trappings of office than for the average punter. It has drawn its leadership from a very shallow pool over the past decade or two which doesn’t help.

R.I.P Labor.

Gay Marriage policy is one of those “be careful what you wish for” areas.

(Devils Advocacy hat-wearing moment)
For all the noise, it turns out that what the same-sex couples really want is the opportunity to get divorced, and they seize that opportunity more often than heterosexual couples, especially the lesbians.
As in the ACT Branch are aiming for an eventual headline of “Labor Party policy is responsible for increase in national divorce rates” wrapped up in some human rights spin, while immediately offending the Christian Right and opening themselves up to second-guessed by the moderate Christian Center, who start thinking things like this whenever there is a gay pride or gay rights march.

Sadly, as you say, past caring.

Predictably enough, zero comments 24 hours later. Nobody cares. Hope they had a nice dinner afterwards at least.
