Could Canberra host a Big Day Out in 2011?

I have watched for many years at the Sydney BDO selling out within 30mins and it makes me ask the question, Could we host a Big Day Out here in Canberra?

With so many headline acts in the country for the festival and cities such as the Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth (and Auckland) why doesn’t Australia’s biggest music festival have a presence in the nations capital?

Maybe something huge for EPIC (in addition to Summernats). Local tourism operators would be happy as it would bring people to Canberra during a usually quiet time of year (late Jan).

I’ll leave it open for comment rather than ramble on with my positive thoughts. ( … and there’s sure to be the odd grumble )
If you build it, they will come.

Just heard on Triple J that the Sydney BDO has sold out, and they’re adding another show; so get in fast if you want to get into that one!

Er, yeah, times *have* changed. Canberra gets it’s share of international acts these days. Stick to events the size of Stonefest – a ‘Big Day Out’ with 5000 people showing up would look rather stupid, wouldn’t it?

It would attract heaps of people from Sydney and regional NSW /VIC.

You’re joking, aren’t you? People in Sydney (quite rightly) don’t want to travel to Canberra for gigs – they have no need to. Regional areas, maybe.

People flock to events like the JJJ organised “One Night Stand” organised in Cowra and other small towns because Cowra, much like every-other-identical-small-rural-town-NSW, is probably the most boring place on the face of the Earth – they don’t get (m)any of these bands coming through and playing throughout the year – of course people are going to show up (‘massive’ numbers like 12000 people…)

Ah how times have changed. I hate to bring up the Good old days but way back in 1972 period, Canberra used to host the Canberra pop festival on the Canberra Day weekend with some brilliant aussie acts of the day – the rockwiz question – the first gig you went to – Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs – gees they were loud. It was all played at the showground (now EPIC). They were the headline act that year. Also saw a band called Geordie who had a young singer by the name of Brian Johnson – hmm what became of him? The showground was packed out.

Anyway the Pop festival was a great gig but eventually it just got too hard.

If you have a look at the success of acts organised by JJJ in Cowra with silverchair a few years ago and the crowd that came for that. The trick is not to compete with the likes of BDO in the capital cities but to take the best acts from those shows and build our own festival here. It would attract heaps of people from Sydney and regional NSW /VIC.

Also it is a must for our centenary celebrations in 2013.

Comments welcome

Ciao Apollo

Eddie Vedder’s quote when we had our last “Big Gig” here in 1995.
“When we got here, it seemed kinda boring”.

Please, we can’t have more international acts frequenting and further perpetuating the stereotype.

It should happen in 2013 … as part of the centenary celebrations

And this is a great idea. We should have a centenary concert featuring some new and old Aussie bands.

Given the money spent on stupid things in the ACT, why couldn’t some be spent on upgrading EPIC. Places like Reading in the UK can support a multi-stage festival in a field through using temp facilities. There’s a lot of empty space around it. I think transport could be a bigger problem.

And we don’t need a crowd equal to Sydney – I doubt Adelaide gets a Sydney sized crowd for BDO

they barely sold out a second BDO in sydney when they did have 2 a few years ago because of it being so popular. dumb idea.

a festival as big as the BDO is only good in ‘bigger’ capital cities. we just dont have the infrastructure or the population in my humble opinion. Splendour works at byron because they keep it containable. Stonefest, trackside, foreshore, corinbank work because they cater to the size of the city. anything bigger than that, its an epic fail. remember when they used EPIC for pearl jam back in ’95? crapfest if ever i’ve seen one. EPIC is not big enough for a BDO.

sure, if there was a space large enough, give it a crack. but there isnt. where would you put the boiler room, in that pissy pavilion that hosts bra sales? the arena is 1/4 of the size of the one at homebush. it wouldnt even hold the stage.

keep dreaming

I’m with Lilli and Justbands – grow the local event/festival scene slowly, with the population.

Mad props to Friction/Lexington for their stellar work with Warehouse, Foreshore and Trackside. Their smaller events (such as the ones at OPH and the now-sadly-defunct Block Party @ dickson) are also well run.

Corinbank looks to be going from strength to strength, as does the Dragon Dreaming event.

Makes you wonder why Stonefest is going downhill, really. They used to be the only game in town, perhaps they’ve been shown up, or perhaps they’ve lost interest.

I didn’t think Trackside was a Friction/Lexington event – think it might be other people.

I went to Block Party at Trinity earlier this year and would assume it would be on again in January 2010.

Also, Stonefest is a University of Canberra event and this year it has been outsourced to a Sydney company and not organised in Canberra. I think the previous organisers did a great job and are still part of the music scene in Canberra.

I think a BDO in Canberra would be great – just maybe not in November ; )

Could Canberra host a BDO…..definitely

Will it?…….not a chance

I went to the first Trackside Festival and thought it was crap. Nothing but drunken teenagers and no ‘festival’ atmosphere at all. Don’t know if the second one was any better…

It would be great if Canberra could host something similar to the Woodford Folk Festival…now THAT is what music festivals should be like.

Woodford?
Yeah hippies sitting around smoking weed, that’s what music festivals should be all about.

I’ll take weed-smoking hippies over teenagers throwing up on my pluggers any day…

…granted, I may just be getting old…er, but Trackside seriously didn’t cut it for me. I don’t think Canberra should give up though…we have real potential to host a music festival with a unique local vibe…a little way to go yet though.

I am not overly shocked at all the people saying “No, you can’t do that” and “it will never happen” as there are just as many who say “nothing ever happens here” (maybe your the same people 😉 )

All good, i’ll just be spending my money in another city AGAIN.

How about we continue to grow our own identity rather than be the poor cousins…..

We lost some of “our own identity” when we lost the fireworks

Please tell me you are kidding

So, let me see if I understand the OP’s question: Why doesn’t this city of 350,000 people (less than 3 hours drive to Sydney) attract a show that other cities of 2 million, 3 million, 1 million, 1.7 million or 1.4 million people get? Hmm …

Fnaah et al, agreed. I liked Trackside, even though they hired a PA company too stupid to check the weather forecast, and put a tarp over their amps when it rained.

It would be a feasible idea, most of the crowd would be from people who missed out from the Melbourne and Sydney concerts so I hardly think that a BDO would be short of ticket sales.

I remember a few years ago “A Day at the Green” held one of their dates at Commonwealth Park Canberra. Ticket sales were poor and in the end they were giving them away 2 for 1.

The festivals held locally Trackside, Corin, Foreshore (as well as the Folk Festival etc) are about the right level for our sized population.

and we could build another runway here to cope with all the Sydneyers whose flights can’t get in to Sydney Airport!

Could easily be hosted in Canberra and it would sell out, but unfortunately nobody thinks Canberra is “cool” enough to host an event like this.

Exactly. We don’t need a BDO…we just need these ones to continue to go from stregth to stregth.

Hmm.. I’ve thought about this previously but I just don’t think Canberra would have the infrastructure to support an event of this scale. Imagine 30,000-40,000+ people travelling to/from the event. It’s nice to dream, but at least in the mean time we have festivals like Trackside to look forward to.

Canberra’s ‘festival’ scene has really come leaps and bounds over the last few years – Foreshore, Trackside, Corin Bank.. let’s hope Canberrans continue to support by attending and that this allows these events to grow and develop.

Plus the Luddite flat earth groups would complain about the noise, the traffic, the environment impact, might scare a particular breed of native xmas beetle away. This in turn will make the local government charge the promotors more and have their influence and branding upon it. It will be taxed to hell and then there will be other issues arising. This will make the tickets more expensive than in Sydney.

Not enough people… enough said.

I mean, sure you could probably get the remnants of the Sydney crowd that didn’t get tickets… but do we really want all the Sydneysiders too stupid/plain unlucky to get tickets here for a weekend?

And even if we did get one hosted here, could the city cope with the amount of people which would flock in? These events aren’t like Foreshore/Warehouse with 10,000ish people (90% from Canberra)… these are mammoth events!

Given that, we could have a “Day Out” as opposed to a “Big Day Out”.

Good idea, but would probably never happen. I would think it would be an attractive alternative for those in western sydney and wollygong as well.

However, just by raising it here, you have probably got some people already organising a public meeting to oppose it due to too much noise, traffic, people, excitement

I hardly think that being the national capital automatically qualifies us to host every big franchise event… especially when we’re within cooee of the biggest metropolis in the country. Just buy your tickets earlier (going interstate for a music festival is fun anyway!).

Still, it would be nice to have one here: I’d go (and I’ve never been to a BDO).
