Countdown on as Jerrabomberra High School gets planning green light

Jerrabomberra High School has reached a major milestone with the Department of Planning and Environment officially approving the development application.

The high school – scheduled to open day one of term one in 2023 – will cater for 500 students and deliver 25 flexible learning spaces, including three support learning spaces.

It will feature a library, multi-purpose hall, sports courts, covered outdoor learning area, outdoor space, canteen and administration facilities.

Member for Monaro Nichole Overall said she couldn’t wait for the school to host its first students next year.

“This has been a massive project, a $57 million commitment to the families of Jerrabomberra,” Ms Overall said.

“I am pleased it is the Liberals and Nationals in government that will deliver this project.

“The project has been designed to allow opportunity for expansion and connectivity if additional learning spaces are required in the future.”

Although the initial capacity was set at 500 students, Ms Overall said the design allowed the school to cater for as many as 1000.

The NSW Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell is proud to see her government deliver Jerrabomberra High School to accommodate and support the growing population of students in the Monaro region.

“A new high school means new learning opportunities for our students,” Ms Mitchell said.

“I’m thrilled to see this progress towards building the new high school in Jerrabomberra.

“We are working hard to provide a new school with modern facilities designed specifically for the community’s needs.”

Over the next four years, the NSW Government will invest $8.6 billion in school infrastructure to help deliver 160 new and upgraded schools around NSW.

Ms Overall said the new high school would provide greater local access to public education.

“The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive,” she said.

“They have been calling for a high school for decades and what this gives them is certainty that day 1, term one 2023, the first students can begin their high school life.

“With everything that’s been overcome to get to the position we’re in – not least COVID – the community has made it very clear to me that what they don’t want to see is anything that might impede commencement for 2023.”

Ms Overall said the newly appointed school principal was working alongside school recruitment and placement to employ the remaining executive and teaching positions. A deputy principal has already been appointed.

She now looked forward to construction work starting at the new school.
