According to this media release and various signs up around the town centre, on Tuesday Belconnen will host a counter-terrorism exercise. This latest locally developed episode of the war on terror will see the Belconnen bus interchange closed for most of the day and relocated to Lathlain st; Benjamin way also closed for most of the day; and Cameron Ave closed for an hour. As an employee of a govt agency in this area I will be very keen to see what they have planned, and the black pyjama brigade in action. I also expect that most agencies and businesses in the vicinity will have a drop in productivity for the day as we all plan to spend most of it with our noses pressed against the glass – unless they get us to participate (I’ll be the one wearing the tea towel on my head). Hopefully part of this exercise will see the old Cameron Offices levelled by the terrorists.

Benjamin Offices! You can’t blow up Benjamin Offices, they’re heritage listed – I believe that the citation reads: An outstanding example of dysfunctional civic architecture demonstrating the victory of architectural bad taste over function and form…

Are they still going to coincide this with the demolition of Benjamin Offices ?

Now that would be cool, except Canberra’s track record of blowing up buildings and not hitting bystanders is not so crash hot.

I thought the story in the CT this morning said they were going to evacuate one fo the government buildings near the interchange (my guess would be statistics or immigration).

Shops in the mall did get a memo round just over a month ago now saying there would be a practice emergency evacuation in the next 6-8 weeks (from then) so I wonder if this ties in?

Oh, are there still AFP in Canberra? I thought JWH has sent them all off to foreign parts.

All govt agencies in Belco are being evacuated. I doubt they would do westfield.

At least we have a day now – we got told “sometime between monday and wed” it would happen.

And they areplanning on evacuating Westfield.

I assume what OzChick says is a piss take, or a display of idiocy on a grand scale.

The Feds pay for this sort of thing

the Fire & Emergency Services Levy is paying for this…

Nooo, Dont let them know that.

Wouldn’t it be funny as, if some schmuck put a ‘dangerous looking device’, such as a bike lamp, somewhere in the bus shelter.

Might even be as funny as the one in Woden, where the local police decided to close the centre for a training run (Oh, sorry, because it was dangerous….)

We got a flyer in the mail yesterday advising residents in Holt and Higgins that they are going to practice on Ginn. High School.

Expect the exercise to centre around a highly dangerous biological warfare scenario. James-T-Kirk and I have both been asked to cut a fart in the bus interchange.
