Coverup your laptop

The AFP website has ground back into action and warns of an aggravated robbery in Kingston yesterday.

ACT Policing are appealing for witnesses to a robbery in the area of Giles and Howitt streets, Kingston today (March 27) about 11.15am.

The offender snatched a lap top bag from the grasp of another man and ran in the direction of Wentworth Avenue.

In most of the rest of the world it’s long been thought ill-advised to carry a bag externally which advertises there’s several thousand dollars worth of computer inside, I guess we’ve reached that point now here.

If someone was to attempt to take my laptop bag I’d more than likely let them have it (unless of course I felt comfortable beating the sheet out of them). The hard drive uses strong encryption, all the data (including my mp3’s) is backed up elsewhere, and the laptop doesn’t belong to me anyway.

thumper, you should try ipsc.

keeps the reflexes up to scratch.

yeah that was probably it… i don’t have a desire to shoot a gun.. haven’t done it since I was a kid living in the mid north west wa… but the skill involved is kind of fun.. perhaps they need to have slug gun range.. I doubt they are legal in australia though?

Yay guns yay targets yay shooting things for fun… ho hum cue testosterone…

pellet gun = the rifle style.. is there a name for those?

two and a half weeks ago I was able shoot a target the size of a CD (or the black bit was) with a pellet gun from about 15/20 metres. That was a whole lot of fun.. best 3 bucks I have ever spent.

I am always aware of my surroundings.. to the point of paranoia… it means that always pick up on things quicker than most.

Bonfire, at 25 metres with a handgun you might be more confident of a shot at a head. You’re unlikely to hit it though.

Whats the point stressing about what could happen – just enjoy everything you do and if shit hits the fan deal with it.

No matter what, I will never walk around like bad things will happen to me – but I guess thats just my stature (physically and emotionally) in life.

Not like I look for trouble – exactly oppisite really – It never seems to find me – no matter where I travel.

Anyway – let me save you the trouble and ill say it – shut up Dan .

wel ad i guess you have to be flexible.

in some places im happy to stroll down the street smiling at nature and confident i wont get rolled or preyed upon.

in other places i travel im more prepared, and pay more attention to my surroundings.

so you could say yes im a flexible person.

but i do have a pretty strong moral code.

so bonfire you are telling me that in reality you have flexible ethics. Me too.

Let me guess–the derro in question was running towards The Causeway.

They really should raze that place to the ground. Kingston’s burgeoining crime problem will be solved just like that.

I look forward to that tumbleweed-infested ghetto being replaced by million dollar apartments, swanky cafes and more faux-swamp.

I would pragmatically shoot you with my browning upon noticing yours, then steal the laptop.

Keep trying.

i do abhor violence, but im also a very pragmatic and practical individual.

I thought you abhorred violence bonfire :p

Me personally I hate violence.. except when I want to be violent.. which is perfectly fair and reasonable.. Wanna argue with my logic I will kick your moogafooging arse :)..

in this scenario i would not shoot them in the back.

if they were within 25 meters im pretty confident of a head shot.

yeah, life for owning a lump of metal and doing no harm.

15 months weekend detention for a pack rape.

Great, then we can be a screwed up with guns as the US.

Just outlaw all guns, and then make very harsh penalities (life in prison perhaps?) for possession.

Well think of it this way, current gun control laws don’t stop bad people from getting guns.

I’m all for liberalising gun ownership.

Yeah bonfire thats a real good idea. I think we should all carry machetes too and hack to death anyone that looks at us sideways. No, no, you’re right. Everyone carrying a rifle would be more appropriate, then we can shoot people you look us sideways from across the street. Actually, I think you havent gone far enough, I think perhaps that maybe an M60 each would be better, because you may get several people looking at you sideways from in the bushes. By the way, you’re an idiot.

Seems my suggestion is the most logical so far.

That and it explains the yuppy shuffle I often see when besuited men are running late for a bus that they can see coming.

Yeah you know it – bend then knees keep the head straight and level – hold briefcase steady by ones side and half jog to stopping bus.

Cue pulp fiction – “Your farther kept this ibook up his arse for 5 years – your fathers father did the same…… ”

Yadda yadda yadda.

Ill shut up now.

Bonfire – So if someone snatched your laptop (as described in this scenario) you would pull your gun? …and shoot them in the back as they fled?

I know I would want to shoot them in the back, but the law may have other things to say.

He can also get himself a browning

Or in the ensuing struggle, steal your gun, and shoot you with it.

It happens.

On the NYC subways, they recommend swapping out the white iPod earbuds for something less obvious.

think of the skid marks on an iBook

I’d suggest a black MacBook.

He can also get himself a browning, try again.

You could run the power cord down your trouser leg and into any convenient socket.

it would be better if we could arm ourselves against these criminals.

i imagine a man with a browning strapped to his waist might not be such a tempting target to a thief.

But think of the skid marks on an iBook.

I suggest internal concealment of both bag and laptop – no one could call you a tight arse for valuing your possessions that way.
