Joy Burch is putting out word on plans for Belconnen’s Theatre:

“The first stage of the redevelopments of the Belconnen Arts Centre created a spectacular centre that is a great resource for the arts community,” Ms Burch said.

“We are now ready to begin sketching out ideas for the second stage of this major project – an adaptable performance space that could include seating for up to 200 – 400 people, workshop spaces, a cafe and community kitchen and outdoor performance space.”

Ms Burch said following an open tender Cox Architecture has been engaged to work on the designs for the second stage.

The ideas for the second stage will be guided by a feasibility study that examined what the needs would be for the Belconnen Arts Centre into the future.

The 2012-13 ACT Budget allocated $300,000 for the feasibility and forward design of the second stage of the Belconnen Arts Centre development.

Cox Architecture has an extensive history of working on major projects spanning different fields. Within the cultural sphere the company’s work has included the Bangarra Performing Arts Centre in Sydney, Fremantle’s John Curtin Performing Arts Centre and the Lyric Theatre in Sydney.

Here’s a good description of where the centre is heading. http://citynews.com.au/2013/fresh-look-at-belconnen-theatre-space/

This is really good news to see solid progress towards completing the Centre. As a BAC board member I can say our plans are to create a centre the northside will be very proud of.

Matt: the two centres cater to very different users and the is nothing in the plans to change that at all.

I’m not suggesting it is in any plans of which you have oversight.

Just documenting this now for future years… Once this second stage of the Arts Centre is complete, I believe the existing Belconnen Community Centre on Chandler Street will developed as something else, probably high rise.
