Craft Beer Festival Review

I went on Saturday with five friends, a beautiful warm sunny day, and the courtyard at Olims was a great place to be. Paid our money at the door and were given a tasting glass with ten tickets. There was interesting range of beers and a few ciders and between us we probably tasted everything there. Highlight for me was the Schwarz dark lager, and their pale ale was really good too, but there were lots of other good ones. The security was low key, the staff on the stalls were friendly and it was a good relaxed vibe.

There were a couple of disappointments that I think reduced the value for money of the event.

The advertising proclaimed that there would be gourmet food. Well, a sausage or steak sandwich from a charity stall and kransky rolls were the only things available – not ‘gourmet’ food in my book. We were also expecting some cooking demos with beer matching, but that didn’t happen either. One of the organisers said that there had been a late cancellation on that, though I note that they were expecting to go ahead with it on Sunday. They had also advertised Dragon playing, but it turned out that they were playing that night at Olims, sometime after the 6.00pm shut down of the beer event.

So for our $25, we got ten tasting tickets and the chance to sit in the courtyard with lots of like-minded people. I acknowledge that we also had the opportunity to taste a range of beers that we wouldn’t usually get at Olims. We had a good time and would support the event again, but all thought that we didn’t quite get what was advertised.

I also agree with this review. It was a great way to taste a range of beers in a relaxing atmosphere (very relaxing after ten tastings). We may return next year, but will be hoping for a better food selection… and maybe a few more beers to choose from. And yes, it would be nice to have some live music there as well.

Mrs Ted and I also were there, courtesy of Canberra Times freebies…I thought the likelihood of Dragon playing a low key daytime gig was small from the outset (shame, as I wanted to hear ‘April Sun in Canberra”). We too missed the “gourmet food” .but the Kransky and sauerkraut rolls were triffic..

Agree that the Schwarz Dark was the standout, but didn’t mind the Bridge Rd either…Like the CT I was surprised by the very equal gender balance, expecting more cave dwelling home brewers but the crowd with exception of self was largely under 35..

Fortunately, Mrs Ted volunteered to drive, so she had 4 tastes of cider and I had..um…16 tastes of beer…plus a bottle I won in the Trivia…

A great day out, especially for free!

I too went on Saturday, and got a extra bonus of 15 tickets in my glass. score!

I wasn’t disappointed at all with the day, apart from some stalls being a bit stingy with their “tastes”. By the end of the day they were being more generous!

The food situation was a bit thin on the ground, but the kransky’s were quite good. I was fully expecting the profitijies (sp!) (little dutch pancakes) to be there, since they seem to be at every canberra event! They would have gone down a treat!

I really enjoyed it. I’d go again. It reminded me of the days of yore when ANU used to have a thing called the Bar Slug… big tent with local bars providing drinks for a set fee. Back in the day when binge drinking was encouraged and revered! Does anyone else remember that? The friends I went with don’t, perhaps due to the nature of the event, it was best not to remember!

Spot on with this review! This was the first time I had attended the beer festival, so going off the advertising, I was expecting to sample many delicious varieties of beer whilst listening to the soothing sounds of 80’s supergroup Dragon.
Yes there was beer tasting, no there wasn’t any gormet food. And no, Dragon certainly didn’t play at the Craft Beer Festival as advertised.
It was a great day, but I definitely felt a little mislead by the advertising for the event.

Oh well, hopefully the organisers get their act together for next year.
