ACT Policing is investigating an incident on Saturday night (September 3) after a 66-year-old war veteran was robbed of a sum of cash at the Cotter Dam.

On Saturday morning the 66-year-old man travelled from country NSW to Canberra with a man he believed to be his friend, with the view of purchasing a vehicle.

About 11.00pm on Saturday night the two men were driving in bushland near the Cotter Dam when the friend told the man he was lost and would need to stop to check the map for directions.

Around this time, a green Holden Commodore, possibly with Queensland registration, stopped close to where the two men had parked. It was at this stage that the victim was dragged out of the vehicle by his friend who placed a knife against his throat.

The offender took the victim’s money, mobile phone and wallet before driving away with the other vehicle. The victim, who is completely deaf and mute, spent the evening on the side of the road before making his way to the City Police Station on Sunday afternoon to report the robbery.

The passenger of the green Commodore is described as around 25-years-of-age. He has shoulder length dark coloured hair and dark features.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the green Commodore in the area of the Cotter Dam on Saturday evening to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

blah blah blah…..proving the moon landings didn’t happen.

So someone that finds it unusual that an old bloke and “a man he believed to be his friend” are driving around the bush at 11pm must be full of conspiracy theories huh?

Nope. But a sick puppy who (in the absence of any evidence) posits that the poor old bloke who got rolled may have been a gay man “looking for a little bit of younger action”, well now, they just might be full of conspiracy theories, among other things.

Hell, even if your seriously strange theory is correct, how is it relevant? The actions of the younger bloke would still be criminal. I don’t think there’s many ways you could justify robbing a senior citizen and dumping them in the middle of nowhere.

Am I the only person that finds it interesting that a deaf, mute owns a mobile phone?

Communication. There’s this thing called text.

How is a deaf mute man a Veteran?

I’m thinking Vietnam, a very long time ago now. Deafness caused by exposure to loud noises, ie explosions, gun fire, leading to a loss in the ability to speak over time.

Certainly not uncommon.

There you go, I understand the deafness bit but I would not have thought that you could go mute as well. I have learned something today, thank you Riotact 🙂

All a bit odd. Came here from country NSW. Where ? Wagga or Yass ? and to be out at 11pm on the Cotter road after looking at cars , where, caryards by moonlight ? the cops know more than their press release.

On the surface of it, robbing a 66 year old at knife point is certainly abhorent, but along the lines of something else to the story I’m wondering if this isn’t plausible:

66 Year old goes looking for a little bit of younger action, the young ‘friend’ susses out what the old creep is up to and arranges an ambush planning to off the sick bastard but chickens out at the last minute so robs him instead.
[/theory]

Seriously, what were they doing driving around bushland at 11pm?

Remind me to ask the cops not to do any sort of local press release if I am the victim of a crime. There are just too many ‘deep thinkers’ in this town who have become bored with proving the moon landings didn’t happen.

PTSD or an injury sustained whilst in service, not that uncommon.

What kind of low-life a-hole does something like this? The more I read about these situations, the less hope I have for this town.

I don’t think the bottom-feeder who robbed the old man is from Canberra..

I hate it when that happens…

Bizarre incident, glad the old bloke lost nothing more than money and a mobile.

…and maybe just a bit of his faith in humanity. I know I did

yes, that is generally always the case. They aren’t going to just blab 100% of their intell about stuff like this.

Said “friend” just bought a ticket to Hell.

Lowlife maggots. Still, can the “friend” be identified by someone else in the country town?

Gawd, that’s just awful!
