I sked the same question at the Cotter Roadblock on my way home to Uriarra the other day. His response was that he had been told the integrity of the dam wall could not be guaranteed with the huge buildup of logs, trees and other debris building up behind the dam wall. And that if the dam wall was to collapse the sheer force of water rushing out could also compromise the integrity of the originial dam wall.

While I find this somewhat plausible yet unlikely, I’m more inclined to believe that it was closed to stop the hundreds of cars going out for a sticky beak and parking on Brindabella Road directly in front of the dam which is designated a no stopping zone and people wandering all over the place causing general traffic chaos.

I also think TAMS need a site for road problems, including all the deep potholes that keep appearing after rain, even when they have fixed them. Something along the lines of the NSW RTA site like this http://livetraffic.rta.nsw.gov.au/desktop.html

Uriarra Crossing is closed again too. I just drove down there to find it closed. I think signs back at Stromlo for Uriarra and Cotter closures would be a good idea to save people from driving down there only to have to turn around and drive back. (And why is Cotter closed anyway? It seems it is safe enough for trucks and machinery for the dam as well as locals to still cross.)
Maybe TAMS needs to have a website that has the most up-to-date road closures on it. If they just send out a media release then it is time and date stamped but a week later we don’t know it is still the current update.

Was open yesterday (8th March, 5pm) but closed again this morning (Friday 9th March, 8am)

Tried going down Coppins Crossing from William Hovell Drive this morning, but it looked like it is closed again (saw cars coming from Coppins Crossing yesterday PM though). What’s more annoying is that the witches hats indicating that the road is closed were right at the end of the slip lane, so there were a couple of cars trying and failing, then trying to get back into traffic.

Ha! I can just imagine the conversations with the insurers…arguments about whether they were actually covered for flood damage, let alone the insurers being adamant that the government were actually responsible for the damage by opening the floodgates on the dam!

Has anyone been down that way to see how damaged the crossing is? Hopefully all the concrete repair work they did last time is intact, and it’s just a matter of putting a new guard rail up.
