ETBMICE is reporting that Crowne Plaza Canberra has, for the second time, taken out the “Deluxe Accommodation” gong at the Canberra and Capital Region Tourism Awards 2010.

Presented at last night’s gala dinner held at the Parliament House, the award celebrates a deluxe hotel offering the highest standard of facilities and services that enhance the tourism experience for guests and visitors.

The win marks the second time Crowne Plaza Canberra has been successful in the annual tourism awards – the hotel won the Deluxe Accommodation award in 2008 and was a finalist in the category in 2009.

Swaggie, I shouted the olds a suite on the ground floor recently. It had a private verandah about 10m x 2m looking out on to parkland and gardens which were beautiful and quiet. The suite was spacious, comfortable, and soundproof.

Thankfully, it in no way resembled the Palazzo Versace.

The olds have travelled a lot around the world, staying in good hotels, and were very happy with the food and the service.

I can assure you from personal knowledge that Premiers can and do stay wherever they want. They always stay at the Hyatt. If you go to the bar when Premiers’ Conferences are on, tomorrow’s announcements can usually be gleaned.

No doubt there are other good hotels for specific markets and purposes, but having stayed at both the Crowne and the Hyatt, it’s no contest. Modern hotel decor is reminiscent of Westfield’s emporia in the better suburbs. Also, none of the Hyatt’s rooms overlook rubbish skips, a brick wall or a filthy service alley.

I should add that Realm keeps winning the best bar award.

Presumably different hotels go for different awards nights. From memory Hyatt has edged out Realm in this same category for the past couple of years at the Australian Hotels Association awards. Considering Crowne won this award, my guess is that both of those properties didn’t enter. Same goes for all the different restaurant awards that are handed out in the ACT.

You must be living in a parallel universe Breda. The Hyatt lives on past reputation, survives on some dubious business practices and it’s food and Service is so over rated as to be laughable. I’d also love to know which Suites offer these views you mention – there are none. Some Premiers may stay there but I’m sure they don’t make the booking themselves.

4 star at best. The Hyatt’s suites are much better, as is the food and service. What they lack in flashiness, they make up in style, comfort and views. Notice that’s where visiting Premiers always stay.
