CSIRO Newsflash - Metal Fences are more robust

The ABC brings us today’s statement of the bleeding obvious from the CSIRO.

It would seem that after extensive testing they’ve determined that the more solid a fence the more resistant it is to bushfires. Not astonishingly they found that steel fences are best of all.

Steel is strong… Thanks for checking that out for us.

On the bright side, perhaps new edge suburbs can now get metal fencing added to their building requirements and I suppose it takes a study, and not common sense to mandate that.

If you get a real hot fire like Victoria’s 1983 Ash Wednesday where all the steel street signs buckled due to heat a steel fence may help a bit but go past 911F or 540C and it all goes to putty.

That fence would want to be as retardant to fire as a politician is resistant to moving into the private market!

Maelinar, trust me – that CSIRO Scientist is in no danger of earning twice what you and your wife are paid. In fact, they’re probably earning less than you are.

If you work in science, and you’d like to earn more than 40K/year, you’ll need a PhD and a whole lotta luck.

Some people at CSIRO earn good money, but they’re the managers, who (usually) aren’t scientists.

hahahahaha!

extract from Camping For Dummies……..

“starting a camp fire using wooden fence palings is better than using sheets of colourbond fencing”

it was like watching a monty python skit on tv last night

That would be, afterall, if you were allowed a fence in your front yard anyway.

I’ve been told that my house, which backs onto a golfcourse, has actually got 3 front yards, which was a bit of a pain in the neck when I was trying to tell the lady at ACTPLA that I want to put a water tank on the side of my house. (apparently it’s a front, not a side).

Nothwithstanding, I’m sure that somebody out there will now build a fence out of steel because of the advice of our fabulous CSIRO.

I’m sure they’ll catch up to Queensland (the horror…) in a couple of years and find out that metal fences are also highly resistant to cyclone conditions as well.

Although I’m sure that a further 2 years of research by a scientist who earns twice what my wife and I earn combined in a year will be necessary in establishing that fact as well.
