CT Desperation Increases [?]

By RandomGit 8 March 2006 10

The Canberra Times are now getting people to hand out free copies of their paper. I was approached today in Garema Place by a person touting an armload of said rag. I waved them away and they looked crestfallen. How odd.

Hint: It doesn’t work for Green Left Weekly so it probably won’t work for you, despite the fact your hawkers don’t smell.

Has anyone else spotted these rag tossers around and about?

[ED – CityNews recent embarrasment on this issue contained some hint of a weird deal where the newsagents, not the CT are giving the issues away. Why they would want to do that remains a mystery]

Bring back Beer for google ad clicks, support the site that supports your rants, Don’t make me draw up flyers 🙂

Enough to pay the bills and throw a party every year.

Not enough to actually pay someone to go out and find the news or keep a webmaster in pot-noodles and home-brew.

But watch this space. Some major announcements on that front coming in the near future.

Don’t the Google ads bring in a bit JB?

All in time JB, all in time.

allclassifieds makes money RG.

RA on the other hand, despite over 10,000 unique visitors a month, does not.

So between The RiotACT and allclassifieds we will bring the CT down yet. Good-O!

Gorman House Markets for several weeks, Kingston Markets, Garema Place – desperation is the word

Geez, I wish they’d drop off a free Sunday copy. Then I wouldn’t have to walk up to the shops to buy one while suffering from a hangover….

Seriously though, newspapers have historically made all their profits from advertising, not from sales. Yes, sales do count, but it is the advertising that counts.

As such I would suspect that other advertising avenues are removing the appeal of the CT, except on a Saturday, although even that is under threat given the proliferation of local web based classifieds.

The CT will continue in one form or another but it is but a shadow of its former self when it was thought of as one of the true independent and newsworthy papers in the country.

The fact that the rely so much on wire news proves the fact and until they can entice good journalists back they will continue to become less relevant, a pity really, after all, a nations capital without a serious rag?

The choice is there. do they become a local paper, or do they become a national paper? At present they are not quite either and until they address that issue I think you will see more and more freebees being tossed on your frosty lawns in winter.

No hawkers, but my driveway was blessed today with a free copy of the CT. It even had a note saying “Welcome to your free copy of the CT” or something like that, I don’t know, I didn’t really pay much attention to it.
