On Saturday afternoon I answered a knock at the door of my Downer residence. It was a Canberra Times representative asking if I bought the Canberra Times and whether I wanted 4 weeks free delivery.

I declined the offer, but I was wondering if I had accepted whether the free offer would have added one to the CT circulation figures for the month? Anyone else had this offer over the weekend?

I also notice in yesterdays paper an entire 3 full broadsheet pages on the casino.

they also provide free copies to most of the schools around canberra

Even free, its overcharging!

They are giving away free ones at the new bunnings store in Belconnen

Rural Press have underestimated the intelligence of the Canberra Market. Producing rubbish (ads/advertorial/wire stories and huge photos) with the occaisional local colour piece, is not cutting it with the well educated, politically aware Canberra crowd. The Canberra Times used to be the best political paper in the country and all the pollies got it in their offices. Now it is aimed at a primary school level – if that.
Rural Press have counted on having a captive market in a one-paper town, but with the tv guide and wire stories available on the net, I can’t see why anyone would buy the Canberra Times. I feel sorry for the couple of journlaists they have left, but I hope Rural Press loses money bigtime when they finally realise they can’t even give it away and have to stop printing it.

Today’s CT featured a whole page on world news.Seem’s it is a small world after all.

there was an article in the CT on the weekend about it.
Note, I don’t purchase this paper, but for some reason dad gets it delivered, despite having very similar views to mine…

you’d definitely be going on the circ figures, as do all the freebies given away at the Show.

Interestingly the CT is now pushing the much hazier number of “readers” where they basically assume every paper sold (given away?) is read by four people.
