CTPI Providers in Canberra (ACT)

Just a quick rant slash wanting to know how others are feeling on this subject, I did see a post about this but it was back in 2009.

Just Got my rego bill (2 in fact, 3rd on its way) but for the smaller car the bill is $286.50 government Fee which is fine gotta put in my bit towards people tempting roadworks. And a $579.20 CTPI Premium (12 months) >>>>$579<<<<<!!!!! ACT Total $865.70

Now out of curiosity I went to the QLD rego bit and sussed out what it would cost to renew the same car but in QLD. I got

(Registration Fee) $280.05 + (Traffic Improvement Fee) $48.85 and same CTPI Provider as the only option in Canberra $331.80 having a QLD Total of $660.70

So my main question is. Is it just out of greed that this CTPI in Canberra is doing this?? Or is there same main reason for it?

Well lets just say I would never ever insurer my car or have anything to do with them for that very reason and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Just my 2c

P.S. For those grammar monkeys that wanna have a go at my grammar….get a life seriously, bet you wouldn’t say it to my face. (referring to a comment on “Stooge Merging article” Probably the guy in the white 4×4 that made the comment).

The second difference is in compensation laws. The ACT wanted to reform theirs (in fact bring into line with other states) to limit the damage from ambulance chasing lawyers but their bill was block in the assembly by the Libs and the Greens. One of the biggest objectors was a Ms Noor Blumer from the Law Society. Does the last name look failure? Interesting that according to the Canberra Times her husband a Mark Blumer from Blumers personal injury lawyers made a $10,000 donation to both the Liberals and the Greens and the bill got blocked. End result is higher premiums for the ACT motorist.

You do know that ‘compensation laws’ means ‘how much money you get if someone else is stupid and causes you to have injuries’. Bet when that happens you will be glad to have paid your extra $150 per year.

OP there is a difference, two in fact. For one Canberra only has a population of just over 300,000 QLD has a few million. The difference of course is with a larger population base the amount of customers you require to pay out claims and still make a profit is lower, so lower premiums. In Canberra with a small population base all you need is a couple of extra claims per year and the profit is shot to pieces. But statistically on a larger population base the effect is minimal.

Even though the changes take effect from 1 July, options for other insurers wont appear on renewals until 15 July at the earliest.

Unfortunately you can’t postpone payment if you are one of the unlucky few who’s registration falls due any time between now and then, and no refund will be offered.

Seems the only option is to renew for 3 months and hope one of the other CTP providers will save you the extra $30 you’ll pay for a 3 month renewal.

BTW, did a little research on how the insurers compare on NSW Greenslip. NRMA is pretty much as they charge us here, AAMI was $170 less. Promising? Fingers crossed.

Yes, there is one particular reason why interstate regos (and not just from neighbouring NSW) are so common on ACT roads, and, as the wiseacres might say, twas ever thus. I suppose that’s competitive federalism in action.

Well, considering it has just been announced that now we can choose from 4 providers in ACT

It’s hopefully less of an issue.
You should check if you can choose from the other providers with your current renewals?I’m guessing if your Rego is due after July 1 you could??
