I think one of the things you will find and probably get upset about is, there is a higher represented amount of persons in the LGBT community that take illicit drugs, it’s not a generalisation, or a lie, it’s a fact. Until that problem is fixed, then yes, places they hang out generally have a high amount of drugs, it is just the way shit happens.

While that may or may not be true (reference?), it is an interesting approach you suggest.

Stat’s show that drug use is much higher by people with mental health issues too (chicken or egg?). Do you suggest police target psychologists offices?

It was Shooters in civic.

LOT33? Makes sense, every body there is always completely thrashed on anything they can get their hands on…

I’m hearing the other club was in Kingston.

I was in Civic at the time, one of my friends came up complaining that she got frisked and questioned after it happened.
They busted more than the mentioned few with drugs, they were just in smaller quantities, so not mentioned, apparently.
There was no other clubs busted that night – and if there had been it would not have been Academy, there was a total of around 30 people in there at any given time during the night.

If the club is involved in dealing then they seem to be getting what they deserve.

He should be in jail and it should be shut down. Down with criminals like him.

totally agree

For the past few years there have been various initiatives aimed at improving relations between the AFP and the local gay community. Poorly thought out, blunderbuss actions such as raiding Canberra’s only remaining gay nightspot – supposedly on the premise of looking for drugs – bring back images of the old vice squad bashing gays and sending them to Cooma jail for 14 years under the old anti gay laws.

This raid has the potential to be a PR disaster for the AFP and could possibly undo all the hard work of the past few years in improving relations between police and the gay community.

What the hell?
What does “supposedly on the premise of looking for drugs” mean??
Cube’s a well known drug hot-spot… it’d be dumb not to raid it!
I’m a regular patron and am happy knowing that the police care about making Cube as safe as possible. Last night was awesome – the cops’ interruption must not have lasted long at all because I didn’t even know anything had happened (at 1am).

I think there would be a few other ways of the AFP offend the community, inadvertently even. I don’t make any inference here other than what it says? The raid could have been for any number of reasons and be pursuant to any number of people. What makes you even think there was a raid? I wasn’t at cube so I cannot be sure what has happened and unless you were there you cannot be either. Stop being so naive.

This really happened and those arse clowns at the Cube deserve all they get!

About a week ago, while I was away, the phone rings at my house at 2:30am. Wife answers it, half asleep. Person on the other end says,

“It’s the Cube Nightclub here, can you please come and pick up your daughter Michelle, she is drunk and high and we need to get her outta here!”

Wife says “Um, I think you have the wrong number…”

Cube “No we don’t, this is the number she gave us, come and pick her up please!!”

Wife “Um, no, my daughter is in bed!”

Cube “No she isn’t, she’s here and she’s under age, come and get her now!!”

Wife “Look, my daughter is not at the Cube, she is in bed, you have the wrong person!”

Cube “Can you go and check that your daughter is in bed, because she’s here at the Cube and she’s drunk and on drugs!”

Wife “No, I’m not going to check if my daughter is in bed because I know she’s there, plus she’s 12 years old and her name isn’t Michelle, you have the wrong house!!”

Cube “Oh’, well what do we do with this girl?”

Wife “I dunno, call the Police and give her to them?”

Cube “We can’t do that, we’ll lose our license!!!”

Wife hangs up.

So why not name the other club SB?

It appears that Cube was the club they needed a search warrant for.

Possible explaination: Police arrested two suspects (patrons) at a unnamed nightclub which led to information of Cube being somehow invloved deeper than simply their patrons involvment, hence the warrant. Possibly staff dealing or even a hiding spot? Who knows for now.

I’m sure the AFP have strict procedures when naming businesses in the public interest. Considering they needed a search warrant, then yes, absolutely in the public interest to name the club.

At least someone hasn’t been stabbed in the head.

Where did the second club come from? Reading the press realease I got the impression there was only one nightclub involved, Cube. The first sentence says “a search warrant on A licensed premises”. Then it goes on to say people were identified selling drugs from A nightclub, and a search warrant was executed on THE Cube. On my reading I got they were selling drugs at Cube, the police executed the search warrant at Cube, and then they seized the substances. I think it’s just poorly-written but is referring to Cube all along, they just don’t name it. Why would they execute a search warrant on Cube if the other people were selling from another nightclub?

The only possible option would be if they were spied selling drugs elsewhere then moved to Cube and were caught, but that seems less likely. Alternatively, if there was another place, maybe it wasn’t mentioned because they didn’t actually find anything there. I suppose it could be interpreted either way but the reading I got from it very clearly was that Cube was the only place they were at. Am I the only person who read it like that???

There may be quite patent operational reasons for not doing so.

Some people are so small minded

not sure if you are being sarcastic but marching in the mardi gras does not equate to taking drugs?

it does seem odd/off, if what you say is true about other businesses in press releases not being identified, that cube specifically is.

I don’t think I made myself clear enough in my original post. I referred to the AFP sending a contingent to march in the Mardi Gras, as they have done since the early 2000s.

Well, in THIS media release one is named and the other is not.

However we did have a story on this going down at cube before the media release came out so *possibly* that is an explanation, or possibly it is not as the timeframes are very tight and I understand media sign off is byzantine for them.

Yes, JB. Strange they’ve named Cube when their press releases in the past have very rarely named specific businesses. Remember last year when the brothel burnt down and they referred to the place as “a premises in Mitchell”? Look, I’m not calling it a homophobic attack but it sure makes you think, doesn’t it? Looks unmistakeably like they’re sending out a clear message to the gays that the days of marching in the Mardi Gras and other gay liaison initiatives are over.
