It is now well known that given a choice between a Kaleen dog walker and Batman in an emergency you’d go for the dog walker.

But how best to utilise this force for good which would otherwise be playing fetch on the relatively safe sports grounds?

Cunning fox that he is Andrew Barr has announced the completion of the Kaleen Enclosed Oval, the fences of which will guide the heroic dog walkers to the places of greater need.

The $900,000 refurbishment of the Kaleen Enclosed Oval is now complete.

The refurbishment is part of ACT Labor’s drive to ensure all Canberrans have access to quality sporting facilities in areas where they are most needed.

The upgrade of the oval was funded as part of the 2011-12 Sport and Recreation Facilities Improvement program and consisted of:

— The construction of a new cricket curators shed beside the ground,

— the conversion of the old cricket curator shed to public toilets,

— the construction of a new four-bay senior cricket practice net facility with synthetic surface, internal drop netting and power supply for the bowling machine,

— an extension of the building to provide an additional set of change rooms, which will facilitate the play of two senior games at the ground at the same time, and

— a complete refurbishment of the existing building including:
— the installation of skylights to all areas,
— new shower partitions and tiling,
— new heating,
— new fit out to kitchen in stainless steel,
— extension of the covered verandah area, and
— re-painting of all areas.

Johnboy, it makes a good story, but just in case anyone is interested in the facts… I know, I know, not likely… the Kaleen enclosed oval has been enclosed for many years. There has been no dog walking there for at least a decade. This is about a little bit of refurbishment, not the enclosure of some previously unenclosed space.
