Currong Flats

There’s a dinosaur like beast-machine attacking the Currong Flats and the former public housing buildings are tumbling, chunk by chunk, to the ground.

The serious phase of the wrecking is now underway, some months after notices first appeared outside the Ainslie Avenue complex alerting passers by to the impending demolition.

FAQS1

All bonded and friable asbestos was due to be removed from the site opposite the Canberra Centre and the Gorman Arts Centre before the walls and internal structures were removed floor by floor. No implosion will take place.

The demolition will reportedly cost the ACT Government $6 million.

FAQs

The apartments were built in 1959. The buildings were eight storeys high and contained 212 units all up. Students lived in the apartments from 2006 to 2014, when they vacated so that demolition preparations could begin.

SHL Development, the company behind the Campbell 5 precinct, bought the sites of the Currong and Allawah flats for $47 million at auction in February.

Allhomes reports SHL plans to build 515 new apartments in buildings ranging from three to 12 storeys on the site, as well as commercial space of about 4100 square metres.

And who are the people behind SHL Development? There is big money and rewarding profits involved here, so it’d be nice to know where they are going.

All you need to know is here:

What an iconic site seeing the building get taken apart piece by piece. It might be slow, but I’m glad they decided not to go with “blow it up and invite the public to watch”, at least we learn from some of our political mistakes lol.

Yeah – I wonder what the replacement high rise will look like though. Will be interesting to see.

Hopefully not like Sky Plaza, the epitome of Canberra apartment ugliness on the corner next to the CSC club at Woden.

I can’t believe I am agreeing with you. Having colour on a building is fine (I quite like a bit of colour on buildings), but the balance and shape is all wrong. Too tall and spindly, without the width to balance the look.

You should perhaps believe in your self more often then.
