News.com is reporting that a 77 year old man is expected to recount today about his experience being the first patient to undergo a “pioneering procedure” in April which he was conscious during brain surgery in order to remove a life-threatening venous aneurysm behind his right eye.

The surgery, believed to be the first of it’s kind, was conducted at the Canberra Hospital by a team led by Dr Vini Khurana, a specialist neurosurgeon and the author of brain-aneurysm.com.

Mr Khurana said the patient was “awake and interactive” so doctors could continually assess his vision and make sure the surgery was not altering it.

Watched a show a while back on similar operation where a probe was slid into the brain of a guy with full on Parkinsons shakes, and the tip heated to burn the problem spot.
The shakes went away immediately. They took the probe out, patched the hole, and the guy stood up and hugged his wife for the first time in years.
Stirring and well… bloody amazing stuff.

And definitely better than Thumper’s jokes…

…using a laser to vaporize a pineal tumor without damaging the parthogenital plate. A subcutaneous microphone will allow the patient to transmit verbal instructions to his own brain.

Like, “raise my left arm”?

Or “throw the harpoon.” People are gonna come from all over. This boy’s an Eskimo.

*DIY brain surgery*

“Doctor – me brain hurts – it has to come out. Nurse – get the chain saw…”

Good on News.com… Great chaps them fellas…

this is what made it spesh: “neurosurgeons used eye pieces with a multi-dimensional MRI scan of the patient’s head displayed on them” from news.com.au

DIY brain surgery. Now that would be pioneering and a great time saver!

Yes, so presumably it was some other aspect of the procedure which made it the first of its kind. Think McFly, think.

Erm, conscious brain surgery is nothing new. Here are 2 million Google results about it.
