I don’t understand how there is a shortage of parkig in the City. Ok, the Canberra Centre has taken all the parks in the old Bunda street car park but they then built three multistory car parks to replace those parks. They all also go underground as well. Ok they cost more uless you get a rooftop space but with that & City West there should be plenty.

I have never seen them full on a normal working day (bar the rooftop).

Maybe you should take a ride down one of this painted/beaded bike lanes, you might realise that it helps to demarcate the transit space within the carriage way. These “swaths of green paint slathered along the road side” do help to remind drives to give way before existing. In fact, this is a growing trend in many major cities. Look at what happening in the CBD of Sydney, Clover Moore is ripping up parking lanes throughout the CBD and beyond to install over 200km of green painted/beaded bike lanes…

Absolutely Canberracurious. How crazy is it to spend money on promoting cycling when there’s a parking problem?? And how those deluded idiots could continue to threaten environmentally friendly asphalt with environmentally unfriendly paint (well pretty darn sure it is) when there are far more environmentally sustainable options like building more car parks is beyond me!

Painting a bike line on a road can’t be good for the environment? You’re going to have to elaborate on *that* one sparky!

It’s not paint. It’s coloured glass beads, the same as they use for the white lines on the road. They get affixed using a glue, the beads and a liberal amount of flame/heat.

Try hitting those large sections on a motorcycle in the wet (made especially worse since you tend to be turning off when passing through them). Only about 100 times worse than the thick white line at the traffic lights…

Also, since you are new to town, the bus lanes are also for taxis and motorbikes. Most are now signposted as such, but the ruling in universal.

The green isn’t there to protect cyclists, it is just to remind drivers that this is a cycle lane, and cyclists have right of way over vehicles exiting, just as cars already in the left lane have right of way over cars wishing to change lanes.

The orange lane at the transition from Belconnen Way to Barry Drive is a bus lane, marked specially for the flotilla of illiterate drivers who never seem to be able to read the “Bus Lane Only” sign.

Apart from that the rest of your post sounds like you lifted the material straight from Alistair Coe’s policy manual. Please be a little less obvious with your Liberal shill trolling. The sum total of all that green paint in Canberra wouldn’t buy the resurfacing of a single car parking space.

You will find similar colour coding of lanes in culturally advanced cities such as Copenhagen and Brisbane.
