Damn Flies!!!

The flies this summer seem worse than ever. Apparently the prolonged drought has resulted in a reduction in the number of dung beetles around. This coupled with the wetter conditions, which allow the dung pats to remain moist for longer, has resulted in a bumper season for flies. After only six weeks, my flytrap already has 5cm of dead flies in the bottom.

I haven’t noticed as many around.

Is it just me, or do we have fewer flies than normal for this time of year?

I tend to burn citronella candles when entertaining outside. Perhaps I’m just lucky, but they seem to work quite well.

And they get very bloody stinky very fast. Yuck.

I’ve been through about 5 of those fly traps – completely full of flies, this season already.

Went to Bunnings Fyshwick to pick up a trap… walked up and down the camping aisle, couldn’t find anything to do with flies, only mozzies. Started leaving and just as I got to the counter area, saw the big bargain bin full of fly traps sitting there. D’oh!

click on the mossie trap link and all will be revealed. I don’t think the cow here would like me to vacuum him, and he’s quite smelly, too.

That mossie trap is brilliant! And I have all the ingredients right here (except the plastic soft drink bottle). That trap, as well as producing carbon dioxide, will also end up as alcohol!

They seem to have you pitching the yeast rather warm though. I guess it’s bakers yeast, which likes warmer temperatures.

As for vacuuming the cow, no way.

Like ew… What do you do with the dead flies? Put them in the compost?

Your local hardware megastore has a selection. The commercial baits are quite effective.

What’s these fly traps? Where do you get them?

And do they make them for mosquitoes?! Flies inside seem to go for those window stickers quite well, but there’s nothing so painless and effective for mosquitoes.

I saw an episode of Fear Factor once where some crazies blended that many flies (and maggots) and drank it. And all but one did it for absolutely nothing.

That’s rather gross but I concur about the fly numbers this year – they seem to have gone nuts
