Dangerous Motorcyclist Speeding in Giralang

Every weekday morning for the last 6 weeks or so some lunatic has redlined his motorbike through Giralang at about 7am. I’ve also heard his bike screaming, and I mean screaming, down the road in the evening on a number of occasions, as recently as ten minutes ago.

This is unacceptable.

I used to ride a large motorcycle, and I can guarantee that regularly riding at well over 100 km/h on a suburban back street will soon result in disaster for the rider and other people. I don’t care too much about the ratbag on the bike, but I don’t want someone to be killed while they’re waiting for their bus or walking their dog in the morning.

If the arsehat who is doing this reads RA or has friends who read RA, be advised that I intend to let the cops know what is happening, and hopefully they’ll be able to send a patrol car over at the appropriate time and sort things out.

Be further advised that I intend to take my trusty smartphone with its HD video camera for a walk every weekday morning from now on. If this stupidity continues I guarantee that within a couple of days I will get clear footage of the individual involved, with his plates identified, and I will submit that to the cops along with a complaint that I will put my name to.

If this dangerous riding doesn’t stop, the rider of the bike may end up dead or maimed like the bloke from MacGregor that Thumper mentioned. Other innocent people may end up dead or maimed. If nothing else, the rider of the bike will end up receiving a visit from the plod once I get some footage.

Thanks for your contributions folks, interesting or otherwise.

You need to calm down mate, and google ZX2R. Redline of about 17,000, they make their best power around 15,000rpm – they just sound fast, while barely making the speed limit !!

I regularly hear these little jiggers (and other similiar small-capacity high-revving bikes) up the main road behind my place – well before I see them. They sure as hell are not breaking any speed limits, regardless of the fact that they sound like an F1 taking off !

As an ex-biker, you should show a bit more tolerance and stop carrying on like world peace is being threatened by some kid on a high-revving slow-as-buggery 250 ! You admit you have never seen this bike – only heard it – so you are not coming from an informed position at all, in regard to the speed it is doing – only the noise you are hearing.

If you saw how slow these things were while they made all the noise in the world – well you would probably be more embarrased for the rider really.

Funny. A mix of armchair critics, and folks with immature attitude to their fellow Canberran. You are all experts. You have seen this rider in Giralang, speeding and/or revving their bike in low gears?

Easy to take a shot as anonymous, gutless internet wunderkinds. Give the dude (the OP) a break, you insignificant whiners.

Hope he gets his video.

That’s good to know.

leaving aside whether the rider was or was not speeding, the simple fact is that some motorcyclists purchase aftermarket pipes that are considerably louder than the original pipes with an aim to make more noise and (marginally) more power. This is with scant regard or consideration for others. Sure, have fun on your bike, but if you want a loud (and possibly illegal) bike, save it for the track. Generally speaking, if a bike is making enough noise to wake people at a disance, then it’s probably not legal.

Of course not. I just expect him to actually have seen the vehicle in question.

fair argument imo.

Well, that’s one well and truly dead horse.

But nobody is going to take it seriously when he hasn’t even seen the vehicle in question, and has no actual evidence of instances of speeding.

So, what, you expect him to present documented, calibrated LIDAR results and time-stamped video evidence to Police before they even consider sending a patrol?

I’m telling you, mate, it’s patently obvious to anyone who’s heard it.

Of course not. I just expect him to actually have seen the vehicle in question.

Steam trains on tracks? Deliberately misreading what I said doesnt give you a valid point.

Still waiting for your times at EC or WP. What do you ride?

He didn’t have too, I’m speaking from personal experience.

Im happy to compare my best times at Eastern Creek or Wakefield Park to yours. You may well be faster 😉 Would that make you more of an expert on the subject?

I can hear a steam engine “maxing out” too. Doesnt mean its breaking any records.

Are you claiming responsibility?

If so, I hope you’re wearing laptop dust protector jacket and laptop dust protector pants. Road rash is nasty.

Awesome skills. You can judge an unknown vehicle’s speed, with no idea of its motor or gearing, simply by hearing it from an indeterminate distance. Sir I salute you!

We had a lunatic young motorcycle rider who used to hammer around Macgregor every day. And by hammer, I mean quite frightening speeds along suburban roads.

He’s dead now.

Cancer? Its takes a lot of people.Very sad.

I completely disagree. When it takes 5-6 seconds for the sound of a vehicle to move through your field of perception instead of the usual 10-12 seconds it’s pretty obvious what’s going on.
Also, you don’t tend to red-line through 3 gears in 5 seconds unless you’re fangin’.

The OP has not said anything along these lines so your post is irrelevant. No measurements have been provided.

Tell me this, would you expect this complaint to stand up in court? Didn’t think so, take your assumptions somewhere else.

Let me rephrase then. He can pass whatever judgement he likes. But nobody is going to take it seriously when he hasn’t even seen the vehicle in question, and has no actual evidence of instances of speeding.

My neighbours once rang the cops about the noise of my bike. The cops dropped round and checked out my bike, which had stock exhaust. My neighbours happened to wander out while the cops were there, and the cops promptly explained to them a few rules of the world:

1. there are noise rules for all vehicles and as long as my vehicle conformed I could ride it whenever I liked at whatever revs it was capable of. If I was not ‘riding’, like in the driveway for a prolonged period of time (i.e. idling) then it counted as property noise and I had to shut it up between noise hours. On weekdays, 7am and after is acceptable for such noise. However, starting up and arriving from trips were ‘reasonable’.
2. bikes and cars can both be ridden/driven at high revs. If they want me not to turn on my engine between 10pm and 7am then, and I quote, “You should consider the same rule will apply to your own cars and visitors cars”

If the rider is on the road then I see no grounds for complaint about the noise. Speed and dangerous driving are separate issues for the police, as is if his bike is not ‘road legal’. I would get used to it as the cops will not move for such a small complaint (there will be dozens of similar ones for hooning cars every day; by the time cops get there the cars are gone so they never bother unless there are lots of cars involved). All you can hope is that he gets picked up on a major road somewhere.

Reminds me of about 30 years ago when the neighbour used to rev up their car at 4AM waking us all up. I retaliated by playing my Kamahl record at full volume with all the windows open. Didn’t hear a peep from them after that . . .

whipper snippers and a barking dog are a good deterent too.

gazket said :

get up early in the morning and hose the road down I guarantee you will find the rider sooner or later not far away.

Finally! its taken 13 posts for the first f*cktard to rear its ugly head..what took u so long?

I just went to ACT Crimestoppers and filed an online report about this, because that seemed like the easiest way to do it. However, while there I noticed that under the “Breaking News” section, the most recent article dated from early September. This didn’t fill me with confidence about the likelihood of getting a rapid response to my complaint.

This is kinda off topic, but has anybody had any success with the Crimestoppers website, or should I just ring the Belconnen police station?

niftydog said :

Give the OP some credit. I’m assuming they have two ears and a temporal lobe; thus they are probably able to gauge whether the rider is speeding or just being a dick. 😉

Thank you.

Some of my mates used to ride 2-stroke Kawasakis both small and large, so I’m quite familiar with engine noise. I mainly rode a GPZ750, so I well understand the thrill of using lower gears to keep the revs of a good bike in the power-band. I used to do it all the time myself. I know that going fast and sounding like you’re going fast are very different things.

But I’m not an idiot.

I can use my ears and I have a very thorough understanding of Doppler shift. When the engine noise goes rapidly up and down in frequency over a few seconds as he passes my house, and is completely out of earshot within 5-10 seconds while still at high revs, then I reckon the rider is travelling Very Quickly Indeed.

I tried to get some footage this morning, and eventually gave up about 7:15 because I have to work for a living, and he went past at 7:23. If I get some footage I’ll post it to RA and you can make your own judgement about whether he’s riding responsibly.

And to Bails @ #4, I love your work, keep it up.

Pretty disturbing attitude. To want to cause harm.

I love that we get a thread on some cat being thrown over a balcony, which brings out the hysterics, but this sort of idiocy goes unchecked.

That said – you do realise motorcycles work on wet roads, yes? You’ve seen them in the rain before? *eye roll*

I also won’t give the OP any credit. Far too many grumpy old men and NIMBYs in these parts!

You’d be surprised how often I’ve heard people say similar things to the OP, only to see a “sportsbike” (read: a 250cc) scream past at roughly the same speed as other vehicle on the road.

I’m not saying that the OP is clueless, just that he is not in a position to judge speed without having actually seen the bike (he only mentions hearing it).

+1 for this. While I am all for giving people the benefit of the doubt, the fact is that the ride of a loud sports bike will most likely be speeding. I know I often am.*

* - this is not an admission of guilt.

I agree with everything you have said. However have you actually “seen” this guy”?

I was at the lights the other day following a CBR250rr with an aftermarket exhaust. It was the most unpleasant sounding noise coming from the bike, sounding like it was doing 100km plus, however it was doing under 50kms – its just because those engines rev so high.

The footage should clear up any confusion though..

As a (former) rider, you should know that going fast and sounding like you’re going fast are 2 different things.

If he’s keeping it in 1st or 2nd around suburban streets, it’ll sound like it’s screaming (depending on bike of course!) but it won’t actually be going anywhere that quickly.

Until you actually SEE him riding stupidly, he’s nothing more than some guy who enjoys the sound of his bike too much.

Both of these. Just because something sounds like it’s moving fast, doesn’t mean it is. I often ride around at 60km/f in first. Of course, my bike is not even 50% through it’s normal rev range at that speed in first.

It seems you have only heard him and as previously mentioned he may just be keeping the bike in 2nd or even 3rd through the suburbs instead of changing up and down all the time, all the while doing the speed limit. Some bikes rev harder like the little Suzuki across, especially small capacity engines with 4 cylinders. And nothing feels better than to ride with your bike in the ‘response zone’ where you may not be going fast but the throttle response is awesome due to high revs.

Motorbikes ARE awesome 🙂

Oh no, someone is riding a motorbike while you’re inside your house? Call the authorities.

Perhaps we can follow the precedent set by the GDE, and reduce speed limits for 20km/h. Heaven forbid our ears are raped by any noise. Ever.

Yes, because holding a normal conversation in your house, or sleeping in your house, is much less important than one person’s idea of fun, no matter how many laws they’re breaking.

I can’t get used to the sound of the supercharged, muffler-less Harley that takes multiple trips up and down Fornax St most days. I figure he’s going between the club house and home.

Anyone know if 7-11 is allowing the club house to continue to operate?

Was only a couple of years ago some tool embedded himself in a tree on Chuculba St. The accident investigations marks can still be made out on the road.

I suspect the fine folk you refer to live and/or meet in the very appropriately named Derrilin Place. I haven’t seen the orange FPV ute down there for a while but he and his mates are the reason I tell people I live in the land of Mad Max.

Maybe it’s like living next to a railway line though – I still don’t like it – but there’s so much car and bike noise in Giralang that I’ve actually gotten used to it.
