Peter Garrett has announced that he’s appointed a new chair to the Council of the National Museum of Australia (NMA).

“Mr Gilbert’s experience on boards for arts organisations, his extensive business knowledge and passion for social justice issues will be a great asset to the National Museum’s Council,” Mr Garrett said.

“His long-term commitment to service of the law and the community, particularly Indigenous Australians, saw him earn admission as a Member of the Order of Australia in 2005.”

Mr Gilbert is Managing Partner of law firm Gilbert + Tobin, and is currently Non Executive Director of the National Australia Bank, Councillor for the Australia Business Arts Foundation (ABAF), and a member of the Prime Minister’s National Policy Commission on Indigenous Housing.

In previous roles, Mr Gilbert has been Chair of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, Chair of the Law and Justice Foundation of New South Wales, Chair of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre and Director of the Bangarra Dance Theatre.

So does this signal a return to an artistic and indigenous focus for the museum?

Oh Jeezus Christ it must be so easy to live in a black and white world (no pun intended)like Ralph.

Maybe he’s been appointed because he has an extensive level of experience in the arts and business community, unlike the previous charman, Tony Staley who was appointed because he was a former Liberal Party president.

Strike a light!

Garrett listed three points qualifying this guy for the position, and the first three posters have latched onto one of them, and started bandying about the old conservative flags, ‘black armband’, ‘left wing’ and ‘environmentalism’.

The guy’s a bloody lawyer with extensive business knowledge, so it’s just as logical to assume he’s a right-wing bastard who’s about to turn the whole museum into a celebration of the decimation of black Australians and the pillaging of the landscape! There is, after all, more evidence in the OP that the guy’s a capitalist scumbag than there is that he’s a communist scumbag.

Can’t anyone just wait until he flies a flag before you try to pin one on him?

“passion for social justice issues” a requirement to sit on a museum board? Don’t tell us we’re going to return to the National Museum’s old “based on the Holocaust Museum” days … speaking of “passion for social justice issues”, Peter Garrett, where does a “passion for environment issues” get a person to achieve for the environment … whales … these days? :0

I hope we don’t go back to the bad old Dawn Casley days of black armband, “all whites are bastards” nonsense. I remember visiting the NMA with some interstate relatives in 2002, them saying at the end of it “if I see one more photo of a protest march . . . “

Another left winger to push the black arm band agenda.
