The Herald Sun has a fascinating story on Parliament House elevator tech Darryl Potts who has won the fight to restore his gun licence despite being professionally evaluated as a threat to public safety and holding views deemed by a tribunal to be extreme and offensive.

Darryl’s thoughts on Israeli art peddlers, however, bear some thinking about.

Captwaaf You might have to wait your turn. Personally I prefer to vilify men with guns, violent men, and violent men with guns..

More pre-canned verbiage without thought. Violent men with guns are some of our most revered national heroes. Every Anzac day I take my kids to the AWM, and I retell the story of WO2 Kevin “Dasher” Wheatley VC, who I regard as the greatest Australian military hero. He was a violent man with a gun, and he gave his life so that his mate Butch Swanton wouldn’t have to die alone. There are thousands of similar stories.

Violence isn’t a good thing, but in an imperfect world it’s sometimes necessary. And Dasher Wheatley should never be idly tarred with the same brush as some low-life criminal with a blackmarket firearm.

In civilian life I agree that firearms should be kept out of the hands of people who are criminally inclined, mentally ill etc. And there should be strict requirements for their safe storage and use. Other than that, my experience has been that men (and women) with guns are generally less (often far less) dangerous then men with cars.

It’s easy to spray cliches and banalities around…”All firearm owners are The Spawn Of Satan and they deserve a bit of vilification so here it comes” etc. It’s obviously a little harder to deal with the complexities and nuances of such issues in a thoughtful manner.

I’m sure that those who disagree will be compelled to open fire, as it were. 🙂

I disagree strongly with you in regards to denying people access to guns due to mental illness. There are different kinds and degrees of mental illness and ppl that suffer from it recieve enough discrimmination as it is. There is a distinct difference between someone who is psychotic and someone who is anxious. If someone who suffers a mental illness is NOT a danger to themselves or others they should be allowed a gun licence. Thankfully the police see it the same was as me. I do agree with keeping firearms out of the hands of known criminals however for obvious reasons.

Oh and fgzk – you are a twit.

Knives are used to threaten. They are kept in the open, easy to get rid of, chuck them in the bushes. Guns are kept in a locked box with access limited to the owner. Harder to get rid of unless you can get the key..

I find it hard to believe that some of you can’t except how people might find it threatening to have a gun in the house. More so if their owner is violent.

It’s fairly evident that in your case I have been picking on the weak, or at least the weak-minded.

I don’t need to know any facts to vilify a group. The less I know the more righteous my vilification. Im just following a well worn path of spreading lies and miss-information about a group of people. Gun owners are murderous bastards. They kill women and children. Read the newspapers. Why would I want to know about scum like that.

A spray like that seems to indicate a tenuous grasp on reality at best. “I don’t need to know any facts to vilify a group?” WTF is that all about? And the rest of it is just addled gibberish as far as I can tell.

A waste of time, bytes, pixels and bandwidth.

As opposed to the fear we all feel because in every kitchen there is a 12 inch bread knife. How many domestic bread knifing incidents are there ?

Very tenuous linkages.

Wouldn’t his security clearance be reviewed anyway. Extreme right wingers are involved in political violence, bombings and shootings, around the world. How could you guarantee his beliefs wont translate into political violence in the future.

Sounds like you are presuming he is guilty already and you have probably never met the person or know the first thing about him except what is written here and in the newspapers (and we all know how factual newspaper stories are…).

Living in fear of what a gun owner will do during a domestic or a relationship breakup is horrible. People who live in small towns or are isolated suffer horribly. Add to this the pressure of police turning up to take the beloved guns and you get a whole new meaning to fear and terror.

Thanks for spreading the irrational fear about law abiding, perfectly normal citizens who just happen to own firearms. Owning firearms does not automatically make you prone to violent attacks on loved ones, random people or political leaders, nor does it make you a racist, redneck, flannelet wearing, F100 driving loony. In a domestic violence situation, if one party was in the mind space of doing the other in, firearms are probably well down the list from knives, hammers, rocks and bits of 4×2 with nails in the end as the weapon of choice. I’m sure the headline of this article would not be anywhere near as exciting and not provoke the same knee trembling ‘we’ll all be klilled’ response if it read “Darryl Potts gets his Wiltshire Knife Block Back”.

The general beat up on gun owners stems from the media spreading alarm and despondency amongst feeble minded individual and politicians who haven’t a clue about the facts involved, like Bob Browns recent claims that there was 300 000 “hand machine guns” in Australia when in fact private ownership of a “hand machine gun” is illegal and was even before the tighter gun restrictions in 1996. We also have the gun control lobby who seem to ignore all the stats about gun related crime and violence declining steadily and make up their own stats to justify their claims to ban all firearms in private ownership.

Have a read of some of the hard facts about handgun crime from the Australian Institute of Criminology. 16% of homicides involve firearms, less than 20% of armed robberies, the majority of those used (85%) were not registered and therefore illegal firearms.

Last time I checked there were plenty of left wingers out there who were prepared to use violence to achieve their aims too.

I doubt family and friends cherish Mr Potts pistol shooting as much as he does. Its made a little more horrible as Mr Potts subscribes to the taking of life for dodgy political reasons. Good on the police for giving Mr Potts something to think about. Better luck next time.

Gun cults can always do with a little more crap.

Sorry FGZK, way too many years of weapons handling experience to ever do that.

BTW, those little colourful ribbons you may have noticed tied to trees and fences around your house may, or may not, be windage markers. Enjoy your day!

I would like to think that expressing a belief in a bizarre story, complex in detail, but totally unsupported by historical evidence (or even logic and the laws of physics), would prohibit you from accessing and working in Parliament House. But then we would have to stop Tony Abbott because he believes in the magical sky fairy.

Not that I am equating Tony with a gun owning nutter. Mr Rabbit is more a big picture kinda guy.

I have looked at the transcript.

He seems well with his fundamental rights to request his guns and gun permit back. The psych having only seen him for one hour and a few minutes was treated as not being credible by the judge. What would one of those tree hugging hippy psych know anyway, they don’t live in the real world.

The police were clearly acting as Jewish conspirators and it doesn’t matter anyway because Mr Potts is smarter then them anyway as the judge summed up. He is likely to just kept testing everyone. He is a smart calculating individual who is well aware of his situation.

It seems that Mr Potts having not committed a crime but merely expressed his views no matter how extreme they maybe is protected to have those views under his human rights. The only question that seems to be under debate is his mental health. If you disregard the Jewish conspirators and the psych then you are left with no one saying he is mentally unstable.

I commend you Mr Potts you have won a land mark case for all the right wing brothers that will not bow down to this left wing ideology. The good and up right members of the community will stand by you.

I wonder if he still has his Job at parliament house, it would be shame that a such a left wing government cannot accept someone with a different opinion to them ?

Slapp.

THE JEWS DID 9/11. ALL LEFT WINGERS MUST DIE. WE MUST HAVE GUNS

And so he outta!

Being a jew hating holocaust denier is not grounds for revokement of a fireamrs license. I am distrustful of Jews, hate Muslims and think all people of lebanese descent should be sent back to where they came from, BUT, i am not about to whip out my guns, (Yes, I have several) and go on a killing spree!

The fact that he has had an AVO against him and has access to pistols is the real concern, and that needs looking into.

An individuals right to an opinion should not be used to carry out any form of punishment by government officials or departments, otherwise all those hate mongering Imam’s at Lakemba would have been locked up by now, so why should it be any different for someone who is anti-semetic?

georgesgenitals11:17 am 20 Jan 11

I wonder what his thoughts on the ‘best’ suburbs in Canberra to purchase property are?
