Dates – for Canberra media landmarks

By COOINDA - 14 December 2009 4

Can anyone advise me of the two following dates:-

1.  When the first edition of “the Australian” rolled of the Mort Street Presses; and

2. When the Shakespeare family sold the Canberra Times?

What’s Your opinion?

Wikipedia is your friend – see the attached link and then follow the link to Arthur Shakespeare. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canberra_Times

The answer appears to be 1964, apparently partly caused by the monopoly busting arrival of The Australian.

Sort of ironic really since Darth Rupert likes nothing more than a profitable monopoly with his name on it.

That date would be about right, it had a story and photo about 3 people that were rescued in the snowy. They chased the group up I guess in 1989 to do a “25 years after story”

I kept issue one, but a few years ago when I was cleaning up, much to my horror, the paper had literally disintegrated into a million bits, so much for archiving newspapers in the home.

The Australian’s first copy was 15 July 1964 …
