Dates - for Canberra media landmarks

Can anyone advise me of the two following dates:-

1. When the first edition of “the Australian” rolled of the Mort Street Presses; and

2. When the Shakespeare family sold the Canberra Times?

The answer appears to be 1964, apparently partly caused by the monopoly busting arrival of The Australian.

Sort of ironic really since Darth Rupert likes nothing more than a profitable monopoly with his name on it.

That date would be about right, it had a story and photo about 3 people that were rescued in the snowy. They chased the group up I guess in 1989 to do a “25 years after story”

I kept issue one, but a few years ago when I was cleaning up, much to my horror, the paper had literally disintegrated into a million bits, so much for archiving newspapers in the home.

The Australian’s first copy was 15 July 1964 …
