I was advised today that David Ives, the IT writer extraordinaire, passed away last saturday.

I know that it is not great news, but I am sure that there are people on this forum that knew David, and would want to pay their respects to him. The funeral will be held at the chapel at the Norwood Crematorium in Mitchell at Noon, on Monday the 19th of May.

as The Riot-ACT seems to be read by the larger Canberra population, I thought that this would be a good way to get the message to the people that I don’t have contacts for.

Hi there,

I can add to Peter’s post that there will be a wake for David at the National Press Club on Monday at 1:30pm following the funeral. Peter, I don’t know if you can update your original post – but any friends of David’s who want to pay their respects are most welcome.

My father also thanks you for the information, he was not going to be able to attend the funeral. He will, however, attend the wake.

Thanks for the info – I will let my friends that I have been speaking to know, there are a couple that I have been unable to reach – which is why I posted here.

David did suggest that we set up a tent across the road from IBM and hold a party for the end of DESINE, but no-one really wanted to do something like that in front of the police college.

He was always ready to bring attention to items of interest for the general IT community, some people liked him or didn’t, but everyone read the CT on monday to see what was new. He seemed to be pretty accurate most of the time, and when he wasn’t, was the first to recognise it.

I remember David Ives. He was always sticking it into IBM about the Defence DESINE contract. Back then the Monday Computer section in the Canberra Times was a little more substantial.
