Daylight savings finally ends this Sunday

John Hargreaves has announced that we can have some light in our mornings again with our harmonised daylight savings regime finally ticking over this Sunday night.

“Last year the ACT Legislative Assembly unanimously amended the Standard Time and Summer Time Act 1972 to allow daylight saving in the ACT to start on the first Sunday in October and end on the first Sunday in April.

“The change was done to harmonise daylight saving arrangements with New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT so as to reduce confusion for interstate travellers and those commuting for business.

The clocks are going back an hour and it is suggested you check the batteries in your smoke detector while you’re at it.

Some kids will sleep in, even if it’s just by 15 minutes, if you keep them up late the night before. If you do this a few nights in a row, you’ll have shifted their body clocks by the full hour.

Glad this worked for your kids. Mine gets up at the same 30 minutes before the sun regardless of what time he goes to bed!

Nah, just a ‘P’ in English, better than most it seems.

Nice bite though, thanks

I thought he only had one. In fact there’s a song about it. Song vs Google, I wonder who wins?

Song and Google both win.

Google:       Hitler + “one ball”          1730 hits
Hitler + “eleven balls”    27 hits

What is debatable is what happened to the other. Was it chucked into the sea or is it at the Albert Hall.

Several versions of the song.
Hitler has only got one ball

Was it true. German army medic

The things that worry some people. A crowning achievement is the ability to punctuate and spell.
Did you end up with all the jelly beans after spelling bee vg.

Four post nutbag!

BTW, it appears that no one has told the mice that power Riotact about daylight saving going back to winter time. Even my computer knows it’s 8.55am and I didn’t even have to tell it.

This is cool, I can post before I posted an hour ago. Here’s anther one, to sneak in before “9.54”.

And that was in reference to Hitler’s wedding tackle, or lack thereof.

Mice as in…the collective mouses of the RiotACT technicians?

I know. You seem to struggle with it. If you need a hand just call.

All together now….daylight saving

That is weird – I posted my comments after Ant’s, but because the clock has since been changed, my comments have been placed before the earlier comments. Freaky!

Actually the GMT offset was the issue, the server clock was on the correct time.

All fixed now ant

Goodbye daylight-of-an-evening …. I’ll miss you (and so will the dogs and kids) … back to feeling like a coal miner … going to work in the dark, coming home in the dark … sigh.

Really, I didn’t know that. And now its been written on RA it just has to be true.

Wow a Pommy winging (comment #14) shock horror!

Poo poo to you Jivrashia! I’m with jakez I love day light saving. I don’t do anything where I need to be outside in the morning anyways 🙂

Sorry, it’s Buffy or nothing in that genre.

I think if Joss had have been allowed to develop “Firefly” it could have been a great series. But it was axed before it’s time.

bigfeet said :

Angel? Really? After Joss’s finest work with Buffy everything else is a let down. I tried Angel but could never get into it. It only made me miss Buffy more.

I always preferred Angel to Buffy, but at least Buffy was consistent, and didn’t have the horrible seasons Angel did (espec. season 4, what a shocker). But when Angel’s good, it’s excellent.

Ten are showing season 1, and hopefully after that, season 2, which was the best one.

If its on the Google, and the internet in general, then it must be right….I mean it couldn’t be wrong could it?

Brilliant retort

This is useful. Ten are showing 2 episodes of Angel tonight, at 11pm and midnight. So getting an hour back means I won’t have to be up until 1am.

Ha Ha. BTDT it sucks doesn’t it 😉

Whats happened with all the Daylight we have been saving for the last 6 months. Is the government hoarding it?

Why can’t they release some?

vg @28, I think you are correct in an official sense but the google popularity meter has “daylight savings” leading “daylight saving” with a score of 4,880,000 hits to 3,280,000.

Thank god it’s over. I can hang the curtains again without fear of them fading.

It is daylight SAVING

“Ovens”. JB, we need an post-posting edit facility!

I reckon they should have a permanent half-hour daylight saving. That would save all this farting around changing clocks, clock-radios, overs, microwaves and countless other devices.

Some kids will sleep in, even if it’s just by 15 minutes, if you keep them up late the night before. If you do this a few nights in a row, you’ll have shifted their body clocks by the full hour.

I do think it’s good to keep on the same time as NSW. For example, if you live in Queanbeyan or Yass but work in Canberra, dropping the kids off at school/childcare and then getting to work on time is much easier when there’s no one hour difference for crossing the state border.

Our little blighters get up about 30 minutes before the sun comes up, regardless of the time, and blindfolding makes no difference…

Americanberran said :

Who wants the sun waking them up at 5AM?
Better preparations, mate…

Thanks, I’ll blindfold the kids 😉

This now means that I & many others can’t take our dogs down to the off leash dog parks after work anymore. That is unless some of us buy our own spotlights to take down.

So? You have to do that for a couple of months during winter regardless of how the clocks are set.

Hear hear!

My afternoon bike ride will soon require lights, and I’ll have to put the daggy reflectors back on my bike! Boo!

Gimme the extra daylight at the end of the day, any day!

Pommy Bastard: 2 hours earlier. The Northern hemisphere (most of it) went off Daylight Savings last weekend and we’re going off this weekend. It’ll certainly make talking to Romania easier 🙂

You must have a really anal schedule for that to make a rant-worthy difference to your day.

No, just getting out of the wrong side of the bed for the past week, in the dark…

Shame it has to end, I’d much rather have the light in the evening with our significant ridges to the west…

“…spring forward, fall back…

Was just going to post that. Makes it much easier to remember which way the clocks have to go.”

I like to think of it as forward to switch it on and backwards to turn it off. You know like a switch.

Still means it gets light later, made worse by daylight savings into April.

That’s got nothing to do with daylight savings, however.

To be fair much of Canberra has significant ridges to the east. Whereas the airport, and Sydney with it’s ocean does not.

The sun gets over the ridges much later than the official sunrise time.

Well at least my computers, phone and set top box will be on the right time again. You would think someone who could make these machines automatically change to or from daylight saving would have the foresight to make it take the timing for that change from the same automated source as where they take their timing from!

Did anyone in the Assembly bother to think that Canberra isn’t as far east as Sydney??? That means that you get up and have breakfast and make lunch in the dark!

The sun rises in Sydney tomorrow at 7.09am and in Canberra at 7.18am … a whole nine minutes later.

You must have a really anal schedule for that to make a rant-worthy difference to your day.

Oh god damn it. I hate it when Daylight Savings ends. What a waste of daylight.

I know it is an Americanism, but an easy way to remember which way the clock goes is spring forward, fall back…

About bloody time!

Harmonise?? Let Sydney do it’s own thing and we’ll do ours!
Get a Queensland up yah!
