Dear ABC, was there really only one news story yesterday?

The ABC was so quiet yesterday I had to manually check their news page to see if the RSS feeds had broken.

But no, it seems the only Canberra news yesterday was a rescue in the Blue Mountains. (Of a Canberran mind you, which is nice)

It’s true, I’m very jealous of the ABC web people with their salaries and career paths, and annual holidays, and nice little radio chats about the latest social media doohickey they’ve been playing with as a substitute for real work, to say nothing of their ability to drop in with massive resources on other industries at whim, and their ability to advertise on tax-payer funded media which brooks no other promotions.

And yes, I have applied for these roles several times without even an acknowledgment of the application.

It’s also true that my perspective might be skewed by being hard at work at 5am this morning while the ABC website approaches 24 hours without an update.

But really I want to say thank you ABC webmasters, for making me feel better about myself.

Couldn’t agree more about the state of the ABC website and the ACT coverage, but what do you stand to gain from trashing it, Johnboy? Going on the record throwing rocks at a potential employer isn’t exactly conducive to their hiring you… to say nothing of the fact that RA doesn’t exactly gain anything by you pointing out to your readers that you (and your contributors) post more stories than the ABC website does.

Actually 666 is the least of ABC online’s woes. The much hyped “The Drum” is updated only sporadically. In the fast-paced online news world, I’m staggered that The Drum has only carried one or two new pieces a week – from that massive stable of contributors.

Over the last few weeks I’ve noticed that sometimes 24 hours occasionally 48 hours elapse between new ABC Online news stories (excluding sports scores) being uploaded – the weekends are especially bad.

I guess they don’t re-format for the website many of the stories they do on radio or TV.

They also seem to shut down on the weekends. The only stories we seem to get then are about the Raiders.

Maybe the guy who does it was sick yesterday.

Johnboy, have you applied for a job at the ABC?

Thought we were talking about the online portal of ABC, do out of work mega producer types seek web editors jobs? What a funny analogy to the ABC.
I am sure Fairfax and news are all about work life balance ha! you must of worked for them as a temp.

Yeh, a temp. Friends of the ABC are everywhere

Johnboy,

Take it from me; you don’t want to work at the ABC. It’s a treacle river of bureaucratic drudgery where your boss is a failed Spielberg type of c*%t and the rest of the staff are stuck there for the rest of their lives. There’s a thick glass ceiling and the only career independence you’ll feel is before you arrive and after you leave the place.

If you’re career hungry (and you seem to be that type), try out Fairfax or News.com. they are always looking for good staff. I used to work at all of the above so if you’re looking for a contact or two let me know what you are interested in doing and ill see if theres anything about. BB

Using their resources to get ABC News 24 up and runnimg before the election is called perhaps?

Johnboy, I am AMAZED you haven’t been snapped up by some large media outlet already. Their loss, our gain I suppose.
