Dear Canberra Times, is it groundhog day?

It is well known that the Canberra Times fears and hates its online readers.

Today my “dailynews” email from them triggered a weird sense of deja vu. So strong in fact that I checked yesterday’s which looked a like this:

Then I compared it against today’s email.

It appears we’re having the SAME DAY over again. Now surely that’s worth a headline?

Couldn’t agree more vg. What also annoys me is that they continue to print it in broadsheet form, as though it is a real newspaper. It takes me longer to rip into small useable squares for the toilet.

When overseas I used to use the CT online for my source of local news. I gave up and decided that the hard copy CT, that I received 2 weeks late, kept me just as up to date. That and flicking through the national news sites and sorting Canberra news.

Pathetic paper, pathetic website

Definite improvement – a more nationwide focus, can’t put my finger on what exactly but it is less Chronicle-esque and more like a worthy national broadsheet, but still including the local issues. Also, he must wield a good blue pencil, as there are definitely less spelling/syntax errors (which were getting so bad I was starting to grind my teeth BEFORE reading!).

They have a new editor now though – has anyone noticed any improvement?

the CT is a pathetic paper (apart from Pryor, if he’s still in it). Their website, however, takes patheticness to a whole new level. Wow, what utter shyte! It’s unreadable. Compare it with the Fairfax sites, it’s embarassing.

In fact, trying to read the CT online is pointless and frankly I don’t know why they bother. Freebie papers in the US manage to do the online thing rather well, while our ‘national capital” paper is a lame and pathetic attempt to hang advertising off a few stories.

They’ve been cobbling together press releases and calling it “news” for years now anyway, so it’s fitting.

Canberra Times new motto: “All the news that’s fit to print – two days in a row”?
