ACT Policing is investigating the death of a man in Watson overnight.

Around 10.15pm yesterday (Sunday, January 6), police attended Antill Street in response to reports of a house on fire.

The fire was brought under control by ACT Fire and Rescue and a search was conducted of the property. The body of a 65-year-old man, believed to be a resident, was located towards the rear of the property.

Initial investigations indicate the fire started in the garage, before spreading to the attached house. The cause of the fire is being investigated by police and ACT Fire and Rescue officers.

A crime scene has been established at the house and AFP Forensics and Criminal Investigation detectives are waiting for the house to be deemed safe by ACT Fire and Rescue officers before starting their examination of the scene.

Traffic diversions are in place on Antill Street near Fison Street and motorists are asked to avoid the area.

Any witnesses to the house fire last night who are yet to speak to police are asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the website at www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

Cross post:
I was wondering if it was Jim or not.
I’ve known him since I was a wee lad, and while I haven’t seen him in a few years, it was still a shock to see the house in the news. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
R.I.P. Jim – You will be missed.

Jim was a top bloke and always extended a helping han.

RIP .

Jims passing is a huge loss. He had done so much for shooting sports in the ACT over the years. Probably helped get hundreds of people started in the sport and was always more than willing to help anybody. Was one of those people who got on with everybody. An all around top bloke.

Spent many a day having a yarn with him, and arranging shoots etc. Was kind of in shock after just having spoken to him on Sunday.

Thoughts are with his family.

RIP slim Jim. You will be sorely missed mate.

A great many shooters in the ACT and surrounds owe a lot to Jim. He gave my wife and me a huge amount of help and encouragement when we first starting shooting. His seemingly endless knowledge could sort just about any problem. Slim Jim will be sorely missed.

Poor old slim I wouldn’t wish the way he went on anyone and will be missed by many

I’m shocked. The dead man was Jim McKinley. It seemed like every time I went out to the SSAA range to do some shooting he would be there, running the range, shooting or just hanging out. He signed off my shooting attendance log book when I was there last week.

He was a good bloke, and this is a bloody terrible way for him to go.

RIP Jim, you’ll be missed.
