Debacle is dead! Long Live Debacle!

Despite Debacle being a regular killing ground for my relationships (I suspect the quick access to parking might have something to do with being invited there for dumpings) it remains one of my favourite watering holes in Canberra (Budvar and Speckled Hen on tap don’t hurt).

So it was with some alarm I received a media release from the bar this morning.

Word has been going around for months that they’re moving half a block down the road, but now we have the dates:

Debacle will be closed from the 23rd February 2013 until the 12th March 2013 inclusive while we prepare to move into our new location at Mode 3, 24 Lonsdale Street, Braddon.

While we are sorry to leave the premises after so many years we would like to invite you all to one last night here at the old premises as we plan to go out with a bang on Friday 22 nd February with a live band and DJ with plenty of reminiscing on our great decade here at this address.

We would like to take this time to thank all our current and previous customers and staff that helped make this establishment what it is today.

Debacle will open bigger and better in mid-March 2013.

Reminiscing on the days when Lonsdale street was cool because it wasn’t ….

I’ve never been so rudely spoken to as when I’ve been served by some of the waitresses there.

I’d say that you haven’t been to many places where people really speak rudely then. For world class rude speaking for example, join the army. There it’s quite possible that you’ll be told by your drill instructor that if you twitch one more time while at attention he’s going to tear your arms off, stuff them in your ears and ride you around the parade ground like a motorcycle. And that’s if he’s feeling nice and you haven’t stuffed up too badly. 🙂

It’s not a good move to giggle in response to a line like that either. Take my word for it.

Sounds a bit kinky mate but what you do behind barrack doors is your business.

The couple of times I have been in the staff were friendly and helpful. In fact I organised my team’s last Xmas party there.

The food and beer were great, so good that the guys said we should book the next years party in while we were there. The wait staff were polite and efficient, the bar staff, polite and friendly. The guy I dealt with for the party was friendly and very helpful in meeting my needs for the party.

Hopefully somewhere nice opens up instead. Debacle has by far some of the worst staff I’ve ever come across during lunchtime. I’ve never been so rudely spoken to as when I’ve been served by some of the waitresses there.

It’s easy to get good service. All that’s required is a customer who is not a c***.

I’ve always found the service to be delightful.

Care to elaborate on the staff…? I’ve heard this on multiple occasions

Took my wife and girls there under johnboys recommendation. Was incredibly impressed by the lovely beers on tap. The so called Aussie hot dog was a bit of a let down but my wife got the enchilada which was amazing and I stole my girls garlic pizza bread and that was great. I saw a pizza come out just before ours and new I should have got that instead.

Staff were fine. Barnan was happy to chat about the beers on tap when I said you have a great range and its nice to see a place keeping away from Australian piss beer.
I guess the only gripe was waitress coming over and trying to take my girls food away because me and my wife had finished.

Defo going back with my bros and trying all of the beers and all of the pizza..

Been to Silo or Tilleys?

We know you’re hurting about this, JB, but on reflection, do you feel that the bulldozer in the Molonglo on Saturday night was, perhaps, a slight over-reaction?

God knows what he’d have done if the Brumbies had lost as well.

They were good, except for the staff.

great place to eat – i trust they will get bigger and better with the move

Hopefully they move somewhere with better sound insulation. It was fine for lunch during the week, but try having a conversation with your chosen company on a busy night with the music blaring .. impossible and a little painful. I resorted to their take-away options when I was still living in Braddon.

The noise issue was probably the major reason why I stopped going there all together, and why I made every effort to diplomatically shut-down or veto any ‘group dinner at debarcle’ suggestions. In most cases I wasn’t alone either.

As long as they take their long bench seats/tables, two-for-one pizza nights, and rustic casual atmosphere to the new address I will keeping going. It would be nice if the TV’s and (occasional) rude staff were misplaced during the move.
