Defence Housing Query?

Dear Rioters

Does anybody have any idea about tenancy rules/leases through defence housing?

My girlfriend’s new sister-in-law is married to an Army officer and will soon be moving into defence accommodation in Canberra.

My girlfriend would like to move in with her (free rent).

My girlfriend and her sister have not been able to find any rules as to whether or not you are allowed to have non-dependents living in the house.

Anybody have any idea?

To OP- why did you make it so complicated for fellow RIOTers? Your girlfriend’s brother is an Army Officer, right? Why did you have to bring in sister-in-law? Post could have been “…My girlfriend’s brother is an Army officer and will soon be moving into defence accommodation in Canberra. My girlfriend would like to move in with him (free rent)….
Anyhow, she probably wants to have more personal space (from you), and has an affair with sister-in-law. 😀

I guess the girlfriend is able to go out and get a job like the rest of us too to pay for her food.

or have i been doing it wrong all these years?

your girlfriend is scabby if she is after free rent. In the adult world, we all have to pay for what we want in life.

Cars, clothes, holidays, and a roof over our heads.

I wouldn’t call that scabby. If she has the opportunity to live with a relative for free rent so one has more money for other things we want in life, like food? I’d call that sensible.

Or in other words, “I’ll lean on family for my needs so I can indulge my wants”. Materialistic much?

Yes, because food is a materialistic possession that none of us needs.

Tell her to stop trying to scab free rent and grow up.

I have to agree.

I wonder he’ll go having his wife and her sister under the one roof? Good luck champ.

so because she thought she had an opportunity to bludge off someone she would? She’d probably earn more respect than growing up and paying her way like the rest of us.

If i was offered free rent in a relo’s house would I take it? no way. I may be happy to live there but i would pay a fair amount.

From Memory from my own ADF days and my brother living with us we were able to have him in the house as he was only 15 at the time and I had him recognised as a dependent (as our mum lived 11 hours away and his dad is a dickhead).Once he left school and started his apprenticeship, they asked him to pay rent/board.

Tell her to stop trying to scab free rent and grow up.

I tend to agree. Make your own damn lunch (or move back home with mummy).

According to an ex-DHA staff member any person living in the house has to be a recognised dependant of the serving member or have written permission from DHA.

There you go, ma7trib’s find… boarders/lodgers “for reward” ie rent (or something in lieu of rent). If she’s living there rent-free, then it’s not in contravention of that requirement.

I thought the ADF had a don’t ask don’t tell policy? Or maybe that’s only to cover the use of in-room video cameras?

Your Girlfriend Wants To Move In With Her?? Ummmmm OK!

Call defence housing? I’m sure they have a call centre and could tell you right away. Unless they don’t want defence housing to know, which is dodgy.

get her sister to have a look at PACMAN (avail online at http://www.defence.gov.au/dpe/pac/ ) – specifically Annex7.F.3c (http://www.defence.gov.au/dpe/pac/V2_Annex_7_F.pdf)

“Not transfer the right of occupancy, sublet the whole or part of the Service residence
(or take in boarders, lodgers or other guests for reward), without the consent in
writing of the appropriate authority.”

In short – ask the HMC…
